In S.Africa: China #1 in head, US in heart

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? When Lebo Mothae speaks about the United States of America, she smiles brightly. ?If I could go to America that would be my dream ? just to be there!?

Mothae?s only contact with American people is when she encounters the crowds of tourists that she must cut through to walk her 4-year-old son from home to a nursery school?close to?Vilakazi Street in Soweto, the South African township.?The area is popular with visitors because it is the street where former President Nelson Mandela once lived and former Archbishop Desmond Tutu still has a home.

To Mothae, a 32-year-old nursery school teacher, the United States represents a beacon of relative racial harmony.

The U.S. and South Africa share a dark racial past, but South Africa?s is much more recent ? white minority rule by the apartheid regime ended when Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and became president in 1994 after the country?s first democratic elections.

And although Mothae questioned her belief in the American people during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the election of an African-American president in the U.S. renewed her hopes for racial equality at home and abroad.

?That election made me feel so warm about the American people,? she said.

Her faith in all things American was enhanced when first lady Michelle Obama visited South Africa last year, a trip that included a visit to Soweto.

?She?s a darling,? Mothae said. ?I remember the day and the time that she came to this side [South Africa]. She?s a nice lady. She?s quite down-to-earth. I like her.

?I see a mother ? a caring person. She?s devoted to what she?s doing. She is an icon for all black women in America, in South Africa and around the world.?

China means big money
But when Mothae talks of the future, and envisages the type of massive investment which might transform Soweto for her child?s generation, she speaks of China, not the United States.?

?China is the number one country because they produce so many things. So many things come from China. Even in America they have to go to China. That makes them the number one country.?

Lesego Seitisho, an unemployed IT administrator in Soweto, South Africa, talks about America.

Across Africa, the sudden emergence of massive Chinese investment, much of it in natural resources to satisfy the needs of its rapidly growing economy, has changed entire communities. Bilateral trade between China and Africa has grown exponentially ? particularly in just the last few decades.

In 1950 China-Africa bilateral trade was just $12 million, but by 1980, it topped $1 billion, according to China?s Ministry of Commerce. That number jumped over the last 30 years, with China-Africa trade volume reaching $114 billion by 2010, according to the Chinese.?Some analysts estimate that figure is likely to reach $300 billion by 2015.

The money has helped to build highways, stadiums and?parliament buildings across the continent ? while also taking away many of the continent?s natural resources. ?

Many leaders, including South Africa?s President Jacob Zuma, have been impressed by China?s enthusiasm for Africa as well as its perceived ?no strings attached? approach to investment.

Perhaps in response, U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a new ?U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa? earlier in June.

The strategy's most important objectives are ?strengthening democratic institutions and promoting economic growth, trade and investment,? according to the White House.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reinforced the idea of Africa as an ideal place for investment in the 21^st century on the same day as Obama?s announcement.

?Africa offers the highest rate of return on foreign direct investment of any developing region in the world,? said Clinton. ?We in the United States like to talk about ourselves as the country that is the land of opportunity. It?s a point of national pride. Well, in the 21^st century, Africa is the continent that is the land of opportunity.? ?

While the U.S. may have an uphill battle selling itself as an economic powerhouse, in terms of cultural influence, it still tops China.?

Close to Vilakazi Street, Ayanda Mchunu, a 26-year-old street-vendor, said his souvenir business has been boosted by a surge in Chinese tourists.

?I keep my eye out for the Americans and the Chinese; we think they have the most money,? he said.

And, despite the ascendancy of China, he said that the ?soft power? of the United States would endure through its cultural influence

?Even children ? they always talk about the U.S.?

?Most of the children, they watch films?The characters are from the U.S.,? Mchunu said. ?That?s why they?re inspired by the U.S.?

After more than three decades on the brink of extinction, the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) ? the largest and most threatened wild bird species in the United States ? is making a modest recovery, thanks to intensive captive breeding and medical intervention. But troubling data reported this week suggest that unless hunters change their practices, the condor will require extensive support in perpetuity if it is to survive in the wild.

The cause of the problem is that the condors ingest lead when they feed on the carcasses of animals that hunters have shot. A multidisciplinary study published on 26 June (M. Finkelstein et al. Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA http://dx.doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1203141109; 2012) shows that chronic lead poisoning persists among condors, despite a 2008 California ban on the use of lead shot in regions where the birds are being reintroduced.

Building on earlier studies, the researchers collected feathers and blood samples from trapped birds and found no discernible difference in lead levels before and after the ban. Condors feed by scavenging; the results show that many of those sampled have dangerous levels of lead in their bodies. Lead poisoning can severely damage the birds? nervous systems and impair liver and kidney function, among other problems, and it can be fatal. The study also found that approximately 20% of condors in the wild have lead levels that are high enough to require costly treatment with chemical agents to remove the toxic metal from their bodies.

?By any measure, the lead poisoning rates in condors are of epidemic proportions,? says Myra Finkelstein, a toxicologist at the University of California at Santa Cruz, who led the research.

The California condor population fell to an all-time low of 22 individuals in 1982, but captive-breeding and monitoring programmes have brought it back up to nearly 400 birds. Of those, half reside in captive-breeding centres, which provide a steady supply of new releases. In California, only 24 chicks have fledged in the wild. At that rate, the study shows, it would take 1,800 years for the population in California to reach 150 ? the number called for in the recovery plan ? without the ongoing release of birds bred in captivity.

Finkelstein?s team did an isotopic analysis of the lead in the birds and identified lead shot or bullets as the main source of contamination. Even though hunters must use copper bullets or other alternatives in condor habitat, some are apparently ignoring the ban. Condors must consume 75?150 carcasses every year to maintain a healthy weight. The study found that even if fewer than 2% of the carcasses contain lead, there is a 50% chance that a condor will eat contaminated meat (see ?Loaded odds?).

?Kudos to the hunters who are using copper [bullets], but it isn?t going to be effective until you get all the lead out,? says Jeff Miller, conservation advocate for the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), based in Tucson, Arizona. Lead ammunition is cheaper and popular with hunters. The American Bird Conservancy in The Plains, Virginia, which advocates for lead-free hunting, argues that publicizing the risk of lead shot to human health might persuade hunters to use alternatives.

Pedro Nava, a former member of the California State Assembly who spearheaded the lead ban, says that a lack of resources for enforcing the ban means that the condor?s future depends on the good will of hunters. He says that the California Department of Fish and Game needs more enforcement personnel. ?They have 300 game wardens in the state. If they were to be consistent with other states in terms of population, they should have a thousand,? he says.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The singing former soldier whose battle injury claims were questioned sang his last song on "America's Got Talent."

Timothy Michael Poe crooned George Strait's "The Chair" before he was cut from the NBC talent competition on Tuesday's Las Vegas-set installment.

The 35-year-old country singer appeared earlier this month on "America's Got Talent" and said he was injured by a grenade in Afghanistan in 2009, but Minnesota National Guard records didn't support his story.

"I don't know that he holds up to other singers on this show at all," said judge Howie Mandel while evaluating Poe.

Poe won over the crowd and celebrity judges during his initial "America's Got Talent" audition that aired earlier this month with a moving story about how he blocked a grenade blast to save his buddies. The National Guard said records show Poe wasn't injured in combat in Afghanistan, and he has been criticized since he made his injury claims on the show.

Poe, who now lives in Texas, later told WFAA-TV in Dallas that he believed he was telling the truth but doesn't know what is real. He also provided a photo to "America's Got Talent" of a soldier that he passed off as himself. Poe's fianc?e, Carrie Morris, said he accidentally submitted the photo of Staff Sgt. Norman Bone in Afghanistan in 2006 because he was rushed.

Poe's dismissal on Tuesday's episode was matter of fact and appeared not to be related to the controversy surrounding his claims. The edition of "America's Got Talent" featuring Poe competing for a spot on the show in Las Vegas was filmed last month before his injury claims were scrutinized.

Adventures in all things food: Do You Like Coffee? Show it Off ...

The days are hot and my cup of coffee is cold! Well, if you make a mean cup of coffee... and I know you do! Seattle's Best is inviting you to show off your best coffee creation.

I took that challenge and headed to my local Walmart to pick up some Seattle's Best coffee and supplies for my own drink.

Many coffee choices to choose from here, but being a West Coast girl I love Seattle's Best.
I chose level 5, dark and intense. We like our coffee strong here and done with a cold brew Toddy Coffee maker this will be perfect for my recipe. You can see my entire shopping trip in search of Seattle's Best Coffee and other ingredients in my Google+ album.
Have you ever tried cold brew coffee? It takes a little longer, but doesn't include as much of the bean oils as hot brewed cups do. This is much gentler on my stomach. ?Just put the grounds and water in a pitcher overnight (we steep it for a full 24 hours), then filter and store till needed.

My creation inspiration comes from the flavors of Summer. I love fruit and the blueberries here are getting dark and juicy. So why not make a blueberry pie cold coffee treat?

My Blueberry Pie Blended Coffee?

You Will Need:

• 1 c. Seattle's Best Coffee Level 5, cold brewed and divided.
• 1/4 c. blueberry syrup
• 1 c. milk
• 1-2 Tbsp. evaporated milk, to the sweetness you prefer
• 1 tsp. cinnamon
• 1/4 c. frozen blueberries, save a few for garnish
• 1 Tbsp. crushed pie crust
• Whipped cream for topping

Fill an ice cube tray with cold brew coffee. Let this freeze for a few hours or overnight. You will only need half the tray, but save the rest for more coffee drinks later on.
When ready to make your drink add all the ingredients, except for a few blueberries, pie crust and whipped cream, to a blender. Pulse till frothy. Pour into glasses and garnish with whipped cream and top with pie crust crumbs and blueberries.

You might be surprised, but the blueberries went very well with the dark, intense flavor of the level 5 coffee. I couldn't have been happier with my concoction. It was the perfect afternoon treat.

What Los Angeles Accelerators Want: Startups That Make Money Right Away

When asked what is the biggest difference between Los Angeles and Silicon Valley accelerators, five from LA told me they're more focused on startups that don't take years to start monetizing. Leaders from Amplify, Launchpad LA, MuckerLab, Start Engine, and?Originate Labs?convened at this weekend's Silicon Beach Festival in Venice, California. They explained that since there's less capital down South, they're less concentrated on long-term plays, even ones that could return bigger multiples down the line.
