How to choose a domain name.

Published by Albertson | February 5, 2012 | | 15

Before you do anything else, you should sit down and write down as many possible domain names for your site as you can. With the explosive growth of the internet since the mid 1990s, you may not be able to register your first choice, so you?ll need to have alternate choices if this is the case.
There are a few qualities which any good domain name should have. It should be as short as possible, with many experts recommending 15 characters or less if at all possible. It should be memorable (which is why having a short domain name is important). Your domain name should also be easy to spell and perhaps more importantly, it should say something about your site.
If your site will be for a business, then the name of your business or a name which is related to what you do is appropriate. For instance, if your company manufactures tea kettles, then something along the lines of smithsteakettles.com would work, as would teakettleworld.com.

This is where coming up with a list of possible domains will pay off, since your first choice (and second and third) may well have already been registered by someone else.
If you?re building a personal site, your domain name still matters, although it may not be quite as vitally important as for a business oriented site. However, if you actually want to have a lot of visitors to your site you?ll still want to choose a short and memorable domain.
Another thing to take into account as you try to decide on a domain name for your site is the domain extension. In case you?re unfamiliar with the concept of domain extensions, these are .com, .net, .co.uk and the like ? the letters which follow the domain name itself. Generally speaking, .com is the most desirable domain extension and if you can register the domain of your choice with a .com extension, then this is the way to go. If you?re targeting a particular country with your site, however, then the country-specific domain (for instance, .co.uk, .jp, etc.) may also be a good choice.
Your domain name is so important to the future of your site that it?s well worth taking the time to choose carefully. Keep it brief, make it memorable and avoid using hyphens and other special characters in your domain name ? after all, which is easier to remember smiths-tea-kettles.com or smithsteakettles.com?
Remember that your domain name is your brand to online consumers and having a domain which is too long or difficult to remember could mean losing out on a lot of business. Even if your site is completely non-commercial in nature, a good domain name can make a world of difference in terms of how many visitors you can get to your site. Brainstorm names and think it over before you register a domain for your new site.
