Egypt tourism takes a hit from prophet protests

CAIRO (AP) ? One of the world's largest cruise ships, its foreign passengers primed for onshore spending, was supposed to dock in Egypt this month. The port call, however, was scrapped because of security concerns surrounding Mideast protests against a film made in the U.S. that denounces Islam's holiest figure.

Once again, Egyptian tourism, an engine of the national economy and a flagship of the regional industry, has taken a hit. It was another setback for a business that had plummeted in parts of the Middle East and North Africa last year during the uprisings known as the Arab Spring, then moved toward recovery this year.

"Small things become like mountains," Essam Zeid, an Egyptian tour guide, said of the fallout from unrest in Egypt since authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February 2011. But he also offered a (somewhat) positive metaphor: "We always say that Egypt gets sick but never dies. Recovery is always an option."

Egypt and other Arab nations undergoing turmoil rely heavily on the labor-intensive trade and see it as key to economic growth and social stability.

Tourism directly contributes a big chunk of gross domestic product to some of the countries that suffered economic fallout from last year's tumult, which came not long after the global financial crisis. Egypt, for example, generates 6.7 percent of GDP from travel and tourism and Tunisia is around the same level with 6.6 percent, with benefits to related businesses pushing the figures even higher, according to the London-based World Tourism and Travel Council. It is among industry groups that will assess the impact from the latest upheaval, though it is too early for a comprehensive estimate of losses.

In the multi-layered Middle East, a setback for tourism in one area can mean a windfall in another. During the Arab Spring, tourists, many of them Arabs, turned away from countries in crisis and traveled to more stable places like Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, said Sana Toukan, Middle East research manager for Euromonitor International, a market research group. The UAE also drew more Chinese visitors, according to Toukan.

The latest downturn followed demonstrations in Egypt against an online film that was produced by a U.S. citizen originally from Egypt and denigrates the Prophet Muhammad. They were part of a wider explosion of anger in Muslim countries. The unrest hit near the U.S. Embassy, far from the pyramids of Giza on Cairo's outskirts, and even farther from gated Red Sea resorts, cocoons for the beach-bound vacationer.

Yet the online or TV images of flames, barricades and whooping demonstrators were a killjoy for anyone planning a getaway, even though the protests have subsided in many places. Tour guides in Egypt say tourist bookings are mostly holding, but they worry about a drop-off early next year as people tend to plan several months ahead.

Tharwat Agami, head of the chamber of tourist agencies in Luxor, home to the Valley of the Kings tombs in southern Egypt, reported up to one-quarter of tourist cancellations through October. His own company guided 17 American tourists last week, half of the group's expected number.

Royal Caribbean International took no chances. One of its vessels, Mariner of the Seas, can carry more than 3,000 passengers. It left Italy, on Sept. 15 ? with regional tension still boiling over the film ? and was to call at Alexandria on the northern Egypt Mediterranean coast three days later.

The company canceled the layover "in an abundance of caution," said Cynthia Martinez, director of global corporate communications at Miami-based Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

"Royal Caribbean International continues to closely monitor the situation in Egypt," Martinez wrote in an email Tuesday to The Associated Press. "At this time, Royal Caribbean has not changed the itinerary of any upcoming sailing that includes a port call to Egypt."

Cruise ships also stayed away during the turmoil that led to Mubarak's downfall. Usually, passengers board buses for a day's outing to Cairo, where the pyramids, the medieval citadel, the mummies of the Egyptian Museum and other treasures await. It's a windfall for guides, ticket vendors and souvenir shops.

Egyptian tourism revenues fell 30 percent to $9 billion in 2011, but the industry proved as resilient as it is vulnerable. It survived the killing of 62 people, mostly foreign tourists, by Islamic militants in a 1997 attack at Luxor that seemed aimed at weakening the government by stopping the flow of tourism revenue. The Sept. 11, 2001 attacks by al-Qaida pummeled tourism, as did 2005 bombings in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh.

Fueled partly by oil income, Mideast tourism is more diverse and reliant on regional customers. Expatriates and tourists splurge in the glitzy city-state of Dubai in the Persian Gulf; religious tourism is big at Islamic sites in Saudi Arabia; Oman and Jordan are angling for a piece of the medical tourism market. The popular uprisings did not affect Turkey but diverted tourist traffic to the country, now rated sixth in the world in international tourist arrivals.

Tourism prospects are a moot point in Syria, which is embroiled in a civil war, and in still-chaotic Libya, where militias roam. The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed on Sept. 11 in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi in an attack on the American consulate there.

In Tunisia, violence and looting around the U.S. Embassy during a protest against the anti-Islam film did no favors for a tourism campaign that had been titled, "All Dreams are Possible."

"It's not one picture when you look at the Middle East," said Sandra Carvao, Madrid-based communications coordinator at the World Tourism Organization, a U.N. agency. "It's a region that has suffered and has proven to bounce back in the past."

Indeed, the agency had deemed the Middle East to be the fastest growing tourism market in the world over the past decade, despite the Iraq war, the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah and other violence. While some Gulf airlines have gone bankrupt, Carvao compared the expansion of Emirates and Etihad Airways to the rate of growth of Asia's aviation leaders.

Amid upheaval and political transition in 2011, according to the agency, international tourist arrivals in the Middle East dropped seven percent to 55.7 million, and in North Africa by nine percent to 17 million. So far this year, the numbers have climbed by nearly one percent and 10.5 percent, respectively.

Gladys Haddad, a tour guide in Cairo, said she was pleased that Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, appealed to Italians to visit Egypt when he was in Rome at the height of tension over the anti-Islam film. She said early concerns that Egypt's Islamist-dominated government might scare off tourists by banning alcohol or mixed beaches have waned, at least for now.

"I don't think they're going to have like a magic stick to do things right away" to improve tourism, Zeid, the guide who is quick with a metaphor, said of Egypt's fledgling government. "We can't really evaluate their work right now. They have lots of other issues on their agenda."

One thing in their favor, immeasurably, is what lies in Egyptian sands. In its bid to revive tourism, the government this month reopened the Serapeum of Saqqara, a subterranean necropolis where bulls were believed to have been buried in giant sarcophagi. The site was closed for a decade for renovation.

One tourist who marveled at Egypt's heritage was Herodotus, the ancient Greek who wrote about Egyptian beliefs and customs, based on what he said he had observed.

According to a 19th century translation by a British scholar, he wrote: "Concerning Egypt itself, I shall extend my remarks to a great length, because there is no country that possesses so many wonders, nor any that has such a number of works which defy description."

Should I write my personal story? And what about publishing it ...

Several years ago I went to a writing conference that drew in authors and agents, and it was a good conference?until Sunday morning. The last panel was composed of mainly agents, discussing publishing. They worked it up to a feverish point and concluded by expressing the view that the publishing world had collapsed, there had been major changes, and basically we attendees were probably not going to be published ? and self-publishing was frowned upon by the traditional publishing world. The room fell silent. Wait, I just spent a thousand dollars to come here and discover there?s no hope? It was a downer that ruined the whole event, and I left for home stunned.

I?m always skeptical about conferences now. Agents come?looking for that author and story that?s going to make money. It?s business, after all. They look for people with platforms ? national champions, football heroes, a country music star, the frat boy who spent a summer in Central Park with the homeless, someone with a lot of media attention. Someone who can draw crowds and produce a best-selling book.

I was reminded of this the other day when I read Chip?s blog at MacGregor Literary. ?Should I write my cool personal story?? I encourage you to read the whole thing, but if you don?t have time, here?s the gist of it.

    1. There?s very little market for personal story books.

    2. It?s where we are in today?s publishing economy. No matter how successful these books used to be?publishers just aren?t selling enough copies of personal story books to make it worthwhile anymore.

    3. Network TV is filled with personal stories (reality shows), there are 20 million blogs, and the web is filled with people who want to tell the world about their stories. There are cool personal stories everywhere ? and they are FREE!

    4. The internet is killing nonfiction book sales. People can find the answers to their questions and self-help needs on the web for free.

    5. That?s taken away the incentive people have to purchase a personal story book, unless there is a great sense of celebrity or media associated with the book.

Sounds like a real downer, huh?

But Chip goes on to say MORE. And it?s the same thing I?ve heard at creative nonfiction conferences and workshops and the same thing I teach in every venue I have an opportunity to speak.

Consider turning your personal story inside out. Don?t focus on your personal story ? focus on the principles for living that come out of your story. Don?t just use the book to tell what happened ? use the book to share the principles for living you?ve learned, and use your story to illustrate those principles.

In other words, it?s not all about you. Remember the reader. Draw the reader in, give the reader something, teach the reader what you learned while going through your personal experience. Reflect. Make something of your story.

I will never forget?at the first Oxford Creative Nonfiction Conference in 2008, I went through a manuscript critiquing session with Dinty W. Moore. We began discussing my manuscript. Then, he tossed it aside and with a sneer said, ?Who cares?? My mouth dropped open. ?Who cares?? I got his point. And it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

IT?S NOT ALL ABOUT YOU. Get over yourself. Give the reader something. Because if we don?t have readers, we don?t have anything. The reader needs to walk away after reading your story feeling as though he bought something worthwhile. He has spent time with you (gotten to know you as a character) and learned with you and from you something that will help him in life and gained insight that will be valuable if he ever encounters a situation similar to yours. It?s not about you ? it?s about the reader.

I?ve said it a million times: Writing that is all about you will never see the light of day in print.

(And self-publishing, Print on Demand, is very likely the way to go in today?s publishing environment.)

Ohio ? Exotic Animal Owners Are NOT Registering ? Top Cats Roar?

Just make sure you keep it street legal.

As we all know, despite a historically bad economy and record unemployment, one of the most high-profile issues tackled during the last legislative session was what to do with the exotic pets some Ohioans like to keep around the house. As sarcastic as that sentence can read,?there were actually pretty compelling reasons to address the topic.

After some legislative mud wrestling down in Columbus, lawmakers passed a law that, among other things, requires exotic animal owners to register their special friends with the state. The needed info includes the location of the animals, the number, and the info on who tends to their health needs. The registration window opened on September 5th, and owners are required to have their animals street legal by November.

Unfortunately, pet owners aren?t getting the message.?According to the Sandusky Register:

Only one person has registered since the law took effect on Sept. 5, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Three others tried, but turned in incomplete forms. Their animals also didn?t have a required microchip with identification implanted in them.

Now, the reason for this lack of participation might not actually stem from the fact that a person inclined to own an exotic animal probably isn?t the type to keep an unobstructed channel open to general society, or at least into fine-print requests of government bureaucracies. Rather, the Ohio Association of Animal Owners, a group opposed to the legislation and running 8,000 strong, is considering a legal challenge.

Anglican church chooses new leader to weather storms

LONDON (Reuters) - Church of England officials met in secret on Wednesday to choose the next Archbishop of Canterbury, a centuries-old role with the modern task of preventing 80 million Anglicans worldwide from splitting over gay marriage and women bishops.

The new church leader must reconcile modernists and traditionalists, and stem a long-term decline in church attendance, a difficult juggling act that some see as a poisoned chalice.

Outgoing Archbishop Rowan Williams, 62, a self-confessed "old hairy lefty" who opposed the Iraq war, said his successor as head of the global Anglican Communion will need "the constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros".

"It'd be hard to find somebody more unifying than Rowan Williams, and yet he hasn't managed to hold it together," Paul Handley, editor of the Church Times newspaper, told Reuters.

"Under him, there have been two significant changes: one is the growth of secularism ... and the other is greater division in the church over issues like women bishops, women priests and gay weddings."

The arcane process of selecting the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury is wrapped in layers of protocol perhaps unsurprising for a role with roots going back 1,400 years.

Meeting for three days behind closed doors at a secret location, a 16-member panel of bishops, church members and lay people will pick a preferred candidate and a reserve choice.

They will give the two names to Prime Minister David Cameron who will forward the name of the preferred candidate to Queen Elizabeth, supreme governor of the Church of England. Once she approves the candidate, Cameron's Downing Street office will make the announcement next week, possibly on Wednesday.

The new archbishop will earn about 74,000 pounds ($120,000) a year and have lodgings in the Old Palace in Canterbury, southeast England, and the historic riverside Lambeth Palace in London. His tenure will last until retirement at 70 or until he decides to move on.

    FAVOURITES

The winner will be under pressure to prevent the Anglican world from being torn apart over homosexuality and same-sex unions. Greater tolerance on those issues among some in Britain and the United States has angered conservatives in areas with growing congregations, such as Nigeria.

One of the favourites to replace Williams is the Bishop of Durham Justin Welby, 56, a former oil executive who trained as a priest after the death of his infant daughter in a car crash.

He sits on a panel set up by the government to investigate the fixing of the Libor (interbank) borrowing rate.

Perhaps the best known candidate is the Archbishop of York John Sentamu, 63, a straight-talking traditionalist and the church's second most senior cleric. Born in Uganda, he fled to Britain after being detained and beaten under dictator Idi Amin.

He writes a column for Rupert Murdoch's top-selling Sun tabloid, a newspaper better known for its daily picture of a topless woman on page three.

Other frontrunners include the Bishop of Coventry Christopher Cocksworth, 53, a father of five who is a popular figure among more liberal members of the church.

The main traditionalist candidate is the Bishop of London Richard Chartres, 65, who opposed the blessing in Anglican churches of "civil partnerships", a formula that gives same-sex couples legal recognition.

The successor to the scholarly Williams will be enthroned in a grand ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral, where St Augustine began England's conversion to Christianity in 597 AD.

The Reverend George Pitcher, who advised Williams on public relations, said the next archbishop should reform the role to make it more manageable.

"The job as it currently stands can't be a job that anybody in their right mind would want to do," he told the BBC. "It's probably a debilitating and depressing prospect becoming Archbishop of Canterbury precisely because the job is undoable."

Did you honestly think Eric Schmidt went all the way to Seoul just to launch the Nexus 7 for South Korea, hang out with Samsung's JK Shin and moan about the patent war with Apple? Of course not. The Google chairman also found some time to learn the legendary "invisible horse" dance with PSY, the charismatic oppan in the Korean chart-topper Gangnam Style. While Google Korea was happy to supply a few photos, the only video we could dig up was a surprisingly short one hosted by Daum -- it's embedded right after the break.

Brian: "Man, not being the CEO of a multinational corporation sure is hard work."

Terrence: "I see you are a fellow disciple of the Carlton Banks school of dance."

    Don: "Gangnam Style, 2012-2012."

Billy: "This song is really about the time I set my socks on fire. I see you still have yours. One moment."

Edgar: "Hm... I think we forgot the horse."

Richard Lai: "PSY, please Google+ me when this comes out on Dance Central."

Dan: "Doenjang Girls, would you like to buy a Nexus 7? It's wayyy more expensive than a latté."

(AP) ? Gov. Jerry Brown rode to Google headquarters in a self-driving Toyota Prius before signing legislation Tuesday that will pave the way for driverless cars in California.

The bill by Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla will establish safety and performance regulations to test and operate autonomous vehicles on state roads and highways.

"Today we're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality ? the self-driving car," Brown said. "Anyone who gets inside a car and finds out the car is driving will be a little skittish, but they'll get over it."

Google Inc. has been developing autonomous car technology and lobbying for the regulations. The company's fleet of a dozen computer-controlled vehicles has logged more than 300,000 miles of self-driving without an accident, according to Google.

"I think the self-driving car can really dramatically improve the quality of life for everyone," Google co-founder Sergey Brin said.

Autonomous cars can make roads safer, free commuters from the drudgery of driving, reduce congestion and provide transport to people who can't drive themselves, such as the blind, disabled, elderly and intoxicated, Brin said.

"I expect that self-driving cars will be far safer than human-driven cars," Brin said.

Brin predicted that autonomous vehicles will be commercially available within a decade. He said Google has no plans to produce its own cars, but instead plans to partner with the automobile industry to develop autonomous vehicles.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers expressed concern that California is moving too quickly to embrace self-driving cars and needs to first sort out liability issues.

"Unfortunately this legislation lacks any provision protecting an automaker whose car is converted to an autonomous operation vehicle without the consent or even knowledge of that auto manufacturer," the trade group said in a statement.

Autonomous cars use computers, sensors and other technology to operate independently, but a human driver can override the autopilot function and take control of the vehicle at any time.

With smartphone-wielding drivers more distracted than ever, backers say robotic vehicles have the potential to significantly reduce collisions and traffic fatalities, noting that nearly all car accidents are a result of human error.

The legislation requires the California Department of Motor Vehicles to draft regulations for autonomous vehicles by Jan. 1, 2015. Currently, state law doesn't mention self-driving cars because the technology is so new.

The regulations would allow vehicles to operate autonomously, but a licensed driver would still need to sit behind the wheel to serve as a backup operator in case of emergency.

The legislation also is aimed at keeping California at the forefront of the autonomous car industry since Stanford University and Silicon Valley companies have been working on the technology for years.

In February, Nevada became the first U.S. state to approve regulations spelling out requirements for companies to test driverless cars on that state's roads.

Carmakers such as Audi AG, BMW AG, Ford Motor Co. and Volvo have been working on autonomous car technology for years.

In recent years, automakers also have been introducing autonomous functions such as self-parking, lane departure warnings and adaptive cruise-control, which allows vehicles to automatically accelerate and decelerate with the flow of traffic.

Outside a cafe in Mountain View, customers said they looked forward to a day when their cars could drive themselves, as long as they could do it safely.

"It would make our streets safer," said Barrett Howard, 33, an auto technician. "We wouldn't have to worry about people texting or getting sidetracked. The computer will take over, and it will make life easier."

Abraham Eshel, a retired mechanical engineer who has vision problems, said self-driving cars would make his life easier, too.

"If I could tell my car, 'OK, you take over when it's dark,' and I don't have to worry about it, that would be fantastic," said Eshel, who lives in nearby Los Altos. "It's a good idea. Why not make progress if it's possible?"

Ed Sullivan's Connecticut Country Home for Sale | Zillow Blog

Television host Ed Sullivan ruled the airwaves for two decades, despite critics? claims that the ?talentless? former newspaper columnist brought nothing special to his variety show duties. But Sullivan endured and remains one of TV?s legends because of his knack for identifying new talent and presenting it to an expectant audience.

Ed Sullivan introduces The Beatles to America's TV audience in 1964. Source: National Portrait Gallery

Example: The Beatles made their TV debut on ?The Ed Sullivan Show? in 1964.

A similar tale can be told about Sullivan?s weekend home in the Southbury, CT real estate market. The 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home at 367 N Georges Hill Rd, Southbury, CT 06488?is listed for sale for $460,000.

Situated on almost 2 acres, the property captured the imagination of Sullivan, a native New Yorker who was sold on the 3,600-square-foot home once he saw the beamed ceiling in the large, working kitchen.

Bethel Patch found pictures from a 1956 edition of American Home featuring Sullivan and his wife at the home. Sullivan died in 1974, but the home remained in his family estate until it was sold in 2008 for $520,000.

According to listing agent JoAnn Bredenberg of Coldwell Banker,?the home was part of a larger estate built in 1920. It was on this farm that Sullivan kept Guernsey and Holstein cows, whose milk he sold.

While the farm property was subsequently subdivided and the home has undergone renovations, the same slate floors and rustic quality that attracted Sullivan to the place can still be seen.

Mid-sized businesses are the big outsourcers today, but will they ...

I interviewed a partner at US firm ISG yesterday. ISG is the company that owns sourcing broker TPI and IT benchmarker Compass Management Consultancy.

As a result it has a great view of the global IT outsourcing sector and I did a short story on my interview with ISG partner Deborah Card yesterday.

ISG has found that the fastest growing part of the Forbes G2000 group of businesses , in terms of IT outsourcing and BPO, is the companies that are mid sized.

There has been a 124% increase over the past five years in the number of business process and IT outsourcing contracts with a value of between $10m and $25m, signed by midsized companies. This compared with a 72% increase in the number of contracts worth over $25m during the same period, signed by big companies.

ISG also said only between 25% and 30% of the mid-sized companies outsourced before 2008. Now they are attracted by standardisation through cloud services because they do not want to have to complete major customisation. As a result Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) and Business Process as a Service (BPaaS) are outsourcing services with significant take-up.

One of the interesting points made was that many of the companies that are new to outsourcing continue to make the costly mistakes that companies made in the past.

Here is some advice from ISG for mid-sized companies embarking on an outsourcing projects.

-Do not think that once something is outsourced it is no longer your problem
-Ensure you plan for change management and governance
-Having clear expectations of the supplier and service.
-Mid tier businesses should look at solutions from a wide range of suppliers rather than the large system integrators. Try and be a big customer for the supplier rather than a small fish in a big pond
    -Look at niche suppliers

In such a mature sector you would think lessons would have been learnt. Mind you there are lots of successful sourcing consultants out there so there must be demand.

I am sure there are many more mistakes being made in outsourcing.

Four Distinct, Genetic Types of Breast Cancer, Study Finds

A new study on the genomics of breast cancer confirms that there are four distinct genetic types of the disease, suggesting that some drugs already used to treat cancer in other parts of the body could possibly be used to treat certain forms of breast cancer that share the same genetic abnormalities.

The researchers, whose findings were published Sunday in the journal Nature, studied the DNA of breast cancer tumors of 825 patients at various stages of the disease, and found that the disease could be stratified into four major genetic categories.

The study, a collaborative effort between 348 researchers, is part of a larger project known as the Cancer Genome Atlas, which is mapping the genetic changes in 20 cancers, including breast cancer. The new study, part of the largest breast cancer genomic project, offers the largest pool of data for researchers who have known for decades that there were genetic subtypes of breast cancer.

"This again reconfirms on a larger scale the heterogeneity that exists between each patient's breast cancer," said Dr. Ben Park, associate professor of oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Park was not involved in the study.

The genetic analysis not only included a comprehensive look at the inherited basis for the cancers but also examined how proteins expressed within the genes affected the type of cancers that were classified.

"We now understand the recoding of the genome that is behind [these cancers]," said Dr. Matthew Ellis, a professor of medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, and a researcher on the study. The Cancer Genome Atlas work "lays the foundation for a new and much more informed approach to developing cures for all our patients," he said.

In particular, researchers found that one type of the disease, more commonly known as triple negative breast cancer, genetically resembles a form of ovarian cancer that is currently treatable. Triple negative breast cancer is an aggressive and deadly form of the disease that responds to chemotherapy but has high rates of relapse.

But clinicians caution that it will take years for these initial genetic findings to change the course of treatment for breast cancer, which is expected to kill nearly 40,000 women in 2012, according to the American Cancer Society.

"You would need to treat a large number of patients with this profile to see whether the hypothesis works," said Dr. Jay Brooks, chairman of the department of hematology and oncology at Ochsner Clinic Foundation and Hospital in Baton Rouge, La. Brooks was not affiliated with the study.

According to many breast cancer experts, the findings confirm that cancers should be defined and treated according to their genetic components rather than their location in the body.

"For a lot of physicians, breast cancer is breast cancer is breast cancer. And the problem is, it isn't," said Brooks. "This is the future of the way we will identify malignancies and the best sort of therapy."

These classifications may eventually guide clinicians to prescribe more personalized treatments for breast cancer patients according to the type of the disease they have.

"Certainly breast cancer patients will want to know whether this study leads to a different clinical approach to the management of their disease, and for now, this is not the case," said Brooks.

For now, the genomic information offers researchers a more definitive understanding of breast cancer, and hope that once the specific type is identified in a patient, a clinician can, eventually, offer an arsenal of personalized treatments.

"Without the ability to understand the various types, we are not able to develop personalized medicine to treat them or develop ways to effectively prevent them," said Lillian Shockney, administrative director of the Breast Center at Johns Hopkins.

Seahawks stun Packers on final play 14-12

SEATTLE (AP) ? In a bizarre ending that capped a tough weekend for replacement officials, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers 14-12 on Monday night.

Russell Wilson threw a disputed 24-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on the final play of the game, a game that finally ended 10 minutes later when both teams were brought back on the field for the extra point.

Wilson scrambled from the pocket and threw to the corner of the end zone as the clock expired. Tate shoved Green Bay's Sam Shields out of the way, then wrestled with M.D. Jennings for possession. It was ruled on the field as a touchdown and after a lengthy review, referee Wayne Elliott came out from under the hood and announced "the ruling on the field stands" and CenturyLink Field erupted in celebration.

It was nearly 10 minutes before the teams were brought back for the extra point.

The final decision is only going to fuel debate about the replacement officials coming off a weekend filled with disputed calls.

None will be debated more than this one. Seattle (2-1) won its second straight, while Green Bay (1-2) and saw its streak of wins in six straight road openers snapped.

Wilson's heave came at the end of a final frantic drive after Seattle had previously missed on a fourth-down attempt from the Green Bay 7 with 2 minutes left. The turnover on downs appeared to end Seattle's hopes and cap an impressive second-half comeback by the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, who was sacked eight times ? all in the first half.

Green Bay averted disaster when John Kuhn fumbled on the Packers first play following the change of possession but center Jeff Saturday recovered. The Seahawks held and forced Green Bay to punt from the 4 with 57 seconds left. The 41-yard punt set Seattle up at the Green Bay 46 with 46 seconds remaining.

Wilson hit Sidney Rice for 22 yards on a slant then went for Tate in the end zone but the ball was batted away with 18 seconds left. He threw over the head of Evan Moore on second down leaving 12 seconds remaining and missed Tate again at the 5.

Wilson took the final snap with 8 seconds remaining. He appeared to be looking for Rice on the right side of the end zone, but rolled left and threw for Tate, who was in a crowd of three Packers defenders. His shove of Shields was obvious and it was never clear who had possession between Tate and Jennings.

Seattle instantly celebrated while the Packers argued with anyone in a striped shirt. Both teams were eventually shoved to the sidelines as Tate stomped through the end zone in celebration. Following the review, Elliott's announcement sent the stadium into delirium and even more confusion ensued until the teams finally returned to the field for the extra point.

Report: ONGC denies bid for Canada oil sands

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? State run Indian oil giant Oil and Natural Gas Corp. denied Tuesday that it and two other state-run oil companies jointly bid $5 billion for a stake in six Canadian oil sands assets owned by U.S. energy giant ConocoPhillips, the Press Trust of India reported.

"I can categorically say that we have not made a bid yet for the $5 billion deal," ONGC chairman and managing director Sudhir Vasudeva told PTI.

Vasudeva said that ONGC is looking for overseas acquisitions, but declined to comment on specific deals or timelines.

News reports Monday quoting anonymous sources said that ONGC, Indian Oil Corp. and Oil India Ltd. made a joint, non-binding bid for the assets in July.

India imports three-quarters of its oil and its state-owned oil companies have been looking to secure energy supplies overseas to meet rising domestic demand.

Executives at the three Indian companies could not be reached for comment.

"We do not comment on market rumors," said ConocoPhillips spokeswoman Davy Kong.

Football Coach Mike Burnett will leave Broad Run for Tuscarora (Va.)

One month after leading Broad Run to its second straight undefeated season and Virginia AA Division 4 championship, Coach Mike Burnett said he will leave the Ashburn school to take a job as the social studies department chairman at Tuscarora, a new school in Leesburg set to open in the fall.

Burnett's bid to become the football coach at Tuscarora is still pending Loudoun County School Board approval.

"I can't imagine it's not going to come through," Burnett said.

Burnett, who lives in Leesburg with his wife and children, broke the news to his players Tuesday.

"It's excruciating," he said. "There's no words that can describe how difficult it is to leave these kids. Everything about football was and is great at Broad Run. That hasn't changed.

"The bottom line is I'm a teacher, I'm a coach, I'm a father, I'm a husband. My schedule right now is really putting a stress on all of those."

In four years as head coach of the Spartans, Burnett turned a 1-9 team into the top AA program in the state. Under Burnett, Broad Run compiled a 43-6 mark with three Dulles District titles and two state championships. The Spartans ended 2009 on a 28-game winning streak and have won 30 consecutive regular season contests.

Tuscarora will open its doors with a full varsity football schedule. The Huskies will compete at the AA Division 3 level and will play an independent schedule.

Broad Run Athletic Director Jack Kirby said he has received interest from several coaches within Loudoun County, and Burnett's departure could trigger a domino effect among coaches from several of the other programs in the county.

"We've already received quite a few phone calls from coaches who are interested in the position," Kirby said. "We will post the job opening on the school Web site as soon as this becomes official and then move forward from there."

    FCPS may cut pool time

Swimming and diving could face a 50 percent cut in practice time under the newest proposed Fairfax County Public Schools budget.

According to the proposal presented by FCPS Superintendent Jack D. Dale, the reduction in practice time is just one of the cuts that also include the elimination of indoor track and all freshman sports.

    Salut,
