[Interview] WordPress Multisite Business ? Mark de Scande from...

Mark de Scande from BlogLines.co.za

Today we continue our semi-regular series of interviews with WordPress Multisite owners.

The following interview is with Mark de Scande, who runs BlogLines.co.za with his wife Charissa. BlogLines is a freemium-style site (free blogs with paid upgrade options).

Mark became a lifetime WPMU DEV member not long ago, and so if you hang out in the WPMU DEV Community, he may be familiar to you.

He is based in South Africa.

BACKGROUND:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself before you got into running your site? What is your background in?

I was in the car audio trade years back. I was fitting sounds system, and so then I started selling car audio online. All was good until I got hit by a scam and got taken for R 30K (South Africa Rand).

Then I started to play with WordPress and started selling paint ball equipment online. Then I opened a shop in Port Elizabeth but closed? it down about three years later. At that time I started my BlogLines site.

?
When did you start the site?

2008-09-28

?
Why did you start the site?

Needed to make money from Google Adsense (ha-ha).

?
Do you have other sites?

Lots. :) ?About 90 customer sites.

?

Featured Plugin - WordPress + Google Maps = Perfect

RUNNING THE SITE:

Do you run the site alone?

Yes (with my wife), but i have the power of WPMU DEV. :) love you guys.

?
How much time do you spend on it (per day/week)?

I am always on there. That is how I make money ? keeping tabs on things.

?
How do you control splogs? / How much time spent? / Are they hard to spot?

Splogs? I love them as they make me money. I use ProSites to limit the number of posts. Then they have to upgrade, and yes they do.

I was wasting my time killing them, but now I know to work with them to make me money.

?
How do you deal with people posting unwanted content?

I only remove content if I get an email asking me, but if there is porn, they get banned for life.

?
Ever had issues??

Yes, some fat ass?attorneys wanted to take me to court for their customer?s content. I just removed it, and the problem was solved.

?
What plugins would you not want to do without?

That is easy ProSites. :)

I use about 40 plugins ? 25 from WPMU DEV.

?

?

MARKETING

How did you first attract people to the site when it was new?

Goolge Webmaster tools (it showed me where to look for more traffic), and I used some JUNK link software. I also used Google Adwords. Don?t waste your money, just keep working on your site. :)

?
How do you attract people to the site now?

I don?t. They just come as we have so much stuff listed on Google. It is easy. Just post something on?BlogLines.co.za, and go google it. You will see it popping up on Google page 1.? :)

And guess what ? our Page Rank is only 3 with Google, but I guess?content is KING.

?
What do you find works best for attracting new members?

Just post on your Facebook. It always works? :)

?

?

NUMBERS

How many sites do you have on your install?

I have 79,355 sites and 76,388 users.

?
How many new sites do you typically see per day/week?

About 100 + per day

?
Have you seen the number of new members increase over the years per
day/week? If so, what would you attribute this to?

Yes, from 1 to 10 new sites and now about 100 + per day ? not all paying, but here and there you get guys payinf $30 for their new sites per year.

?
Can you give us an idea about how much the site makes?

We also do websites for customers for $339, so about $50 per day. It is still a lot of money in South Africa. :)

?
Where do you find your customers for websites?

Through Facebook and friends of friends (99% of the site we do? are customers of customers).

?
So at least indirectly you get your website customers through running BlogLines?

Yes.

?
So the sites you build for customers ? are they separate from BlogLines, or do you just put them on the site and use domain mapping?

They are part of BlogLines, and then I use domain mapping.

?

?

?

FINAL ?QUESTIONS/ADVICE

What are some things you like best about running the site?

Love WordPress and love playing with new stuff from WPMU DEV.

?
What are some things you like least about running the site?

There is not a thing. I love it all. It is just hard work.

?
What advice would you give to someone that is thinking of starting a multisite? (Maybe the three most important things you would want to tell them.)

1) Dedicate Server

2) WPMU DEV

3) NEVER GIVE UP

Using Self-Hypnosis With The Metaphoric Relationship Enhancer

I wrote this article on my wedding anniversary and so was delighted to be writing about using self-hypnosis for enhancing relationships.

Last weekend, my wife and I were dogsitting for a family pet; Mick the dog; a very good looking, incredibly well-behaved 10 year old Border Collie.

We took him out for a couple of very long walks over to our local beach, we went through the wooded area, up to the top of the clifftop, back down the other side onto the pebble beach and all the way back along the beach.

It was at this beach, that Mick decided to initiate the stick throwing and fetching game. He found a stick, a piece of driftwood that he took to. He would trot in front of me, turn back, look at me and plop it on the floor. Then he'd take a couple of steps backwards whilst looking at me, crouching and ready. I would then pick up the soggy, chewed, dribble and sand covered stick and launch it as far as I could and he'd run off to fetch it, bring it back and we'd start all over again.

This went on seemingly tirelessly, though he slept incredibly well in the evenings, I must say. For his early morning and late evening ablution walks around the nearby woods, we'd do a similar game with his ball (which thankfully has a ball throwing gizmo meaning I do not have to pick up his ball with my hands, it is constantly wet and chewed and a worryingly brown colour) and it'd help wear him out some more.

I say all this, like it all went smoothly and simply.

However, all was not as plain as it seems from my initial write-up. Oh no.

Every now and then, Mick did not want to fetch what you'd thrown for him; one evening we got to our back gate and I thought I'd throw the ball for him one more time. In response, he sat by the gate and stared at me as if to say "I have had enough of the ball throwing game, I want to go in, you better go get the ball."

I had to go and get the ball, and I got plenty of exercise on that occasion.

Other times, I thrown the ball or the stick and he'd not go for it, but as soon as I got close to it, he'd dash in with speed and pace and grab it from under my nose and then want to play a sort of "dog-chase" game that usually involved him goading me into a tug-of-war with the ball or stick.

And on other occasions, he'd get the ball if we were going in particular direction, but not in another direction. It all took a lot of flexibility and learning about how best to do things in order to derive the best responses.

Ok, so this is all a little bit tongue-in-cheek and I am unlikely to be championed as Cesar Milan material just yet, but we had a wonderful time with Mick and my relationship with him is something I am using as a metaphor for enhancing relationships with this simple, short and sweet self-hypnosis technique.

Corydon Hammond himself uses a process of a Golden Retriever metaphor for helping people who constantly pursue uncommitted partners and almost begs them for love, so I thought I'd adapt such a process based upon my experiences this weekend and offer you a lovely process here today within our theme of relationship development.

Simply follow these Steps For Metaphorically Enhancing Your Relationship:

Step One: Induce hypnosis. Use whatever method you know. Alternatively, get deeply relaxed or mindful and develop a receptive mindset. Then move on to step two.

Step Two: Imagine yourself in a place in nature. Maybe a woodland area, a beach or a park of some kind. Become aware of the colours around you, the weather, the sounds of life. Breathe the clean fresh air and enjoy the temperature that is just right for you.

Walk through this area and tell yourself that each step you take takes you deeper inside your mind.

As you walk, imagine that you are walking a dog, notice how it walks, what breed it is, notice it stopping and sniffing and how you cannot always predict its movements. Watch the dog walking within a comfortable distance with you, let yourself drift deeper inside your mind and when you really have this and are tuned into the scene in your mind, move on to the next step.

Step Three: As you walk, start to reflect and think about your relationship in your life, take a few moments to think about it, assess it, think about the role you play within your relationship.

Once you have spent enough time to get a sense of your own relationship while you continue to walk in nature with the dog, then move on to the next step.

Step Four: Watch as you notice at your feet a stick. The stick looks perfect to throw for your dog and for you to both engage in some harmonious fun together.

Notice the colour of the stick, it's size and details.

As you bend down and pick the stick up, feel the weight of it, the texture of it and see that the dog's attention is caught and it starts to look at you with it's ears pricked up.

Have a really good think now - what do you say? What do you do? How do you encourage the dog and help it become interested in the stick? Right now, in your mind, do whatever you can, to get the dog involved, engaged and even excited about playing with the stick with you.

You may find that it requires a number of different approaches until the dog truly engages, reach deep inside yourself and use as many different ways as possible to engage the dog and really communicate your intentions well.

When you have done this, perhaps you have noticed that dogs tail is wagging and it is really ready, then move on to the next step.

Step Five: Now throw the stick. Become aware of how you thrown it, where you threw it.

Watch as the dog refuses to go and fetch it. The dog sits there.

Did you throw it far enough, or too far? Did you throw it in the right direction? How does the dog react?

Right now, work out what is the best way to throw the stick, perhaps you need to run after it to show your dog what to do, or perhaps the dog requires you to fetch it together for the first time.

Go and fetch the stick yourself and notice how the dog reacts, what it does in response. Get it engaged with you again using your strategy from the previous step and when you have engaged your dog again, throw the stick in a different way, having thought and considered it... And watch as your dog bounds happily away and after the stick, tail wagging, mouth open, eyes bright and alert.

Each step the dog takes as it picks up the stick and brings it back to you, takes you deeper inside your mind and you then move on to the next step.

Step Six: Watch as your dog brings the stick back. It holds it out to you and as you lean to get it, notice if it lets go easily, or if it wants to wrestle the stick, or if it is reluctant to let go.

Think about what you say to the dog to have it let go of the stick easily and smoothly, notice your tonality and what your intentions need to be in order for the dog to respond.

Adjust your communication accordingly and play with the dog while it comfortably lets go of the stick so that you can throw it again.

Continue to throw the stick as many times as is optimum for you both to connect, enjoy it together and bond. Notice what tells you that your dog wants to carry on playing and notice what tells you that your dog is nearing the stage where you can stop playing this game.

When you sense the time is right to stop throwing the stick for now, bring it to an agreeable end. Pet your dog, stroke it, embrace it, and give it some love that shows undeniably that you enjoyed this and that you feel closer to your dog as a result of this time that you shared.

Step Seven: As you carry on walking comfortably through this place in nature, start to think of your own relationship and ways you can enhance it, ways you can bring more harmony, fun and enjoyment to the relationship in a way that strengthens it.

Once you have spent enough time thinking about that, plan on taking some action that is going to truly aid your relationship and enhance it in some way and then move on to the final step.

Step Eight: Now take a couple of nice deep, energizing breaths, wiggle your fingers and toes and open your eyes.

Go and take that action and enhance your relationship.

Thank you for your inspiration Mick, and although this article is a little tongue-in-cheek in places, I think you'll love running this process and I wish you the best with it.

Dear College Grads: 4 Tips to Get Hired | OpenView Blog

With many college graduations a few weeks behind us, I have come across a slew of articles and blog posts pitying college grads who are on the job hunt. In return, I?ve seen responses from college grads upset about being thrust out into the ?real world,? jobless and feeling sorry for their ?bad luck.?

This is my wake up call for the graduates who are commiserating with their friends and explaining to their parents why they need to live at home for an extra year or so because it?s just a ?tough job market these days.? Guess what? It?s not that hard to find a decent job. The job market is picking up, so stop complaining!

Nothing grinds my gears more than people whining over something that can be addressed and proactively worked on. Instead of dismissing the idea of getting a good job after graduation, recent grads should follow these four tips and attempt to provide an example of what is possible ? instead of focusing on excuses and complaining about what?s not ? by snagging a respectable job and living the dream.

First, Be Proactive

Please don?t expect an employer to come knocking at your door to offer you a job, because that?s not going to happen ? nor has it ever happened in the past. If you haven?t already (and shame on you if you haven?t!), put together an up-to-date, proofread resume. Try out some nice looking templates, and make it look clean.? After this task is complete, start doing some research. The worst way to apply to jobs is to create a blanket application/resume/cover letter and mass-apply to every job in the area. It?s very clear when this has been done, and your application will be tossed immediately.

Be Selective

The more you narrow down your search to jobs that truly meet your background, or to jobs that are actively accepting recent college grads ? like this job! (shameless plug) ? the better chance you have of being considered. Also, since you are looking at a smaller amount of jobs, you can tailor your resume and cover letter to the company and requirements. By applying to fewer, but more realistic jobs, you?re actually increasing your odds of getting hired.

Don?t be afraid to Network

Seriously, people love helping other people out, especially if they love their company. Do not be afraid to talk to everyone you can about potential job opportunities. Even if it might seem awkward to reach out to your old professor, or even a past high school classmate, just do it! What?s the worst that could happen? They say no, I don?t want to help you (doubtful), or they simply don?t respond? Who cares? That would put you in the same spot, and best case they get you in touch with a hiring manager!

Make sure to Follow up

Okay, so you?ve applied to a job you can?t believe you?re such a perfect fit for, but you haven?t heard back. Time to move on? Not quite yet. Research (Google) an HR contact and follow up on your application. It?s very possible, especially with entry-level jobs, that your application has become lost in the shuffle. Even if the role you applied for has been filled, the company may admire your perseverance and try to find another fit for you. It?s a shame to spend so much time carefully applying to specific jobs, only to decide you?re not going to bother following up on them.

Disclaimer: Don?t become a pest! As important as it is to follow up, there is a point where it becomes annoying to the company and they will become turned off. Once is enough, twice at the very maximum.

You?re already a step ahead of the game with your college degree. I?m becoming extremely adverse to the idea of college grads who are so very disappointed to be thrown into the ?real world,? and who think their lives are over. Getting a sweet job is way better than college, and you will actually have money to spend on things that are fun. Stop crying and get to it!

Harold Berman's Revolution in Western Legal Thought, Part I ...

In a series of posts, I will discuss the great enterprise of the late professor Harold Berman. ?That enterprise was nothing less than to relate fundamental developments in Christianity and other core beliefs to fundamental developments in law. In this post I will introduce Berman and his project. ??In the second, I will summarize some of the most important themes of his books. In the third and fourth, I will offer my own views on some of the implications of his narrative for liberty.

?? Harold Berman was a professor of law for approximately sixty years, first at Harvard, then at Emory. When I was a student at Harvard, he was known around campus mostly as a specialist in Soviet law?a legal system now happily defunct. ?Nevertheless his work on the history of the West reflects his experience of Soviet law in two important ways.? First, Soviet law reflected an ideology and Berman sought to show that law throughout history was not simply functional but always reflected far-reaching worldviews. ?Second, Berman thought the Western tradition was worth defending?both against the external threat of communism and the internal threat of nihilism, which Berman saw represented in law by the Critical Legal Studies Movement growing up around him at Harvard.

The canvass on which he labored was enormous. ?His first book Law and Revolution: The Formation of the Western Legal Tradition wound a course through the German folk traditions to the papal investiture controversy under Pope Gregory VII to Henry II?s confrontation with Thomas A Becket. ?His second book, Law and Revolution II: The Impact of the Protestant Reformation on the Western Legal Tradition considered how the reformation theology of Luther and Calvin transformed law in both Germany and England. He was at work on a third volume that would have extended his history of law?s development through the French Revolution.

No sketch of Harold Berman can be complete without a reference to an epigram in which he summarized children?s natural grasp of natural law: ??A child says, ?It?s my toy.? That?s property law,? he said. ?A child says, ?You promised me.? That?s contract law. A child says, ?He hit me first.? That?s criminal law. A child says, ?Daddy said I could.? That?s constitutional law.?

Legal Seafoods Showcases Wines of Sonoma County | Atlanta ...

soft shell crab Legal Seafods

In case you didn?t know, I LOVE seafood. Given the choice, I?ll almost always pick a seafood entree over a meat one. Just don?t make me work for the prize. Crab legs and lobster that I have to crack open and dig out the goody myself? No thanks. Legal Seafoods is offering a special selection of wines from Sonoma County through June 10 and invited me in to sample them along with some of their best menu items. Thrilled doesn?t even begin to describe how I feel about the seafood I sampled.

Instead of ordering off the menu, we asked manger, Steffen Gaebler, to choose items he loves for us. Beginning with the clam chowder and mussels, dinner was off to a delicious start. If you have a large group, the mussels are a perfect choice as the portion is very plentiful. We paired these with a glass of the Terlato Pinot Grigio and the Benzinger Chardonnay.

The selection of wines from Sonoma County include four whites and five reds. Most are available by the glass for about $11 and by the bottle for around $40. Flights are available for around $12, which includes a 2 oz. pour of three different kinds of varietals.

Next we sampled some menu specials: Soft shell crab (pictured at the top) and the jumbo shrimp. I?m picky about soft shell crab ? it has to be done just right or I can?t stand it ? this was perfection. And the hint of balsamic on each bite was wonderful. The jumbo shrimp was paired with a sauce that has an Asian flair to it ? just exquisite.

We were sitting outside, as the weather was pleasant and the view of downtown is spectacular, but at this point the wind forced us inside the restaurant. Once settled inside we sampled the Legal Seafood crab cakes (love them) and the ?mixed grill? of scallops, trout and swordfish. Chef even brought out the Chocolate box for dessert, which we promptly mopped up.

Facts about Legal Seafood:

  • They have terrific prices on bottles of wine that you can?t get anywhere else.
  • They have free refills on coffee and cappuccino.
  • They only keep seafood for three days to ensure freshness, even though the government allows restaurants to keep it for eight.
  • Even though they are a big corporation, their buyers and the fisherman they buy from seem to go back a generations in partnerships.

I?d love to tell you how fantastic the red wines from Sonoma are. But I can?t. I fell hard for the Terlato Pinot Grigio and just couldn?t swap to anything else. And this is coming from a red wine lover. Although you may think only whites compliment seafood, Legal Seafoods recommends the Pinot Noir with the Salmon and the Cabernet with tuna or swordfish. This special wine selection goes until June 10. So hurry in to sample these tasty wines from Sonoma County at Legal Seafoods.

Tip: They validate for self-parking in the lot around the corner (3 hours max). I hate valet, but in this case I recommend paying the $5 (discounted rate when dining at LS) to avoid the not-so-fun walk around the corner.

Brian Johnson, Mike Zunino lead Florida past South Carolina in SEC Tournament

HOOVER, Ala. |?Brian Johnson pitched a five-hitter, and Mike Zunino hit a two-run homer to lead Florida to a 7-2 win over South Carolina on Friday night, eliminating the two-time defending national champions from the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The Gators (42-17) face Vanderbilt today for a shot at the SEC championship. The Gamecocks (40-17) went 1-2 at Regions Park.

Johnson (7-4) pitched his first career complete game and had retired nine in a row before giving up back-to-back hits and a run in the ninth.

"He didn't misfire all night," Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. "He executed his pitches all night long, and that's really what you have to do against a team like South Carolina."

Johnson struck out five, didn't walk anybody and coasted through on 89 pitches. And he finished, despite the ninth-inning run.

"I felt good," said Johnson, who also had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. "I came in in the eighth and told Sully I wanted to finish it."

His last trip to Hoover didn't end as well. He sustained a concussion after getting struck in the back of the head by a ball in last season's tournament.

The Gamecocks only managed one other threat off Johnson before the final inning. They had back-to-back singles to open the sixth, but Johnson got Joey Pankake to ground into a run-scoring double play.

Casey Turgeon added a two-run single in the three-run fifth to make it 7-0.

Zunino had an RBI groundout in the first and then delivered his league-leading 16th home run with a shot over the left-field fence in the third for a 4-0 lead.

"We wanted to come out early and often, and that's what we talked about right before the game," said Nolan Fontana, who went 2 for 3 with a pair of walks and three runs scored for the Gators.

Turgeon, Preston Tucker and Josh Tobias also had two hits for the Gators.
Chase Vergason went 2 for 3 for South Carolina.

The Gamecocks had beaten Florida twice in the College World Series to claim the national title last season, but they were outhit 11-5.

Starter Colby Holmes (6-1) couldn't make it out of the third in his first loss of the season.

"We've had a lot of games this year where our pitching has carried us," South Carolina coach Ray Tanner said. "We weren't very good tonight, and you can't do that against a team like Florida when Brian Johnson's on the mound.?He's very good. He's going to pitch on the next level and probably for a long, long time."

Sports fever comes to chemistry

Caroline Morley, online picture researcher

It feels like there's no escaping sports fever this summer. A certain five-ringed logo even inspired chemists to create this new molecule.

Called olympicene, this molecule is related to graphene and is based around five hexagonal carbon rings. The structure was entered into the online chemical database ChemSpider two years ago, but only now have David Fox and Anish Mistry of the University of Warwick, UK, brought the molecule into physical reality.

Fox commented that olympicene could have interesting optical and electronic properties and applications, along with other graphene-related molecules. He said: "These types of molecules may offer great potential for the next generation of solar cells and high-tech lighting sources such as LEDs."

This image was taken using non-contact atomic-force microscopy at IBM Research in Zurich, Switzerland.

At just 1.2 nanometres in width, olympicene is the smallest set of five rings you're likely to see this summer, but it is unlikely to win any medals. Let's hope it escapes the branding police.

Teachers paid six-figure sums to walk away from their jobs

More than 160 school staff who were sacked or made redundant in the past year picked up generous payouts.

One Fulham headteacher was given almost ?200,000 for loss of office when his school merged with another.

The investigation shows teachers were paid tens of thousands of pounds to leave school ?by mutual agreement?, and many signed confidentiality clauses.

Emma Boon, campaign director of the Taxpayers? Alliance, said: ?Taxpayers will view these payouts as overly generous packages at a time when schools are searching for savings.?

Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act show Dinesh Ramjee, former head of Henry Compton school in Fulham, was paid ?195,490 to leave after it merged with nearby girls? school Fulham Cross to become Fulham College.

Other payouts include:

  • A headteacher in Lambeth was given ?117,500 after stepping down ?by mutual agreement?.
  • An Enfield head was paid up to ?30,000 after resigning and signing a confidential ?compromise agreement?, which means no further action could be taken against the council.
  • A Bromley teacher was given a ?termination payment? of up to ?22,000.
  • A member of staff at a Greenwich school was awarded ?59,215 after being made redundant.

Ms Boon said: ?Sadly, good headteachers might occasionally have to be made redundant ? and most will be entitled to receive a redundancy payment ? but some of these sums look excessive.

?Details of these arrangements must be published to ensure taxpayers? money is not being abused.?

Mr Ramjee, who stepped down from Henry Compton school in August 2010, has been volunteering with VSO in Gambia since he left his job, after 37 years in education. Union representatives negotiated the settlement.

He said: ?It was a private arrangement between myself and my governors and the local authority.?

A Hammersmith and Fulham council spokeswoman said: ?We now have one executive headteacher, instead of two, which has led to substantial and ongoing savings.?

Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Headteachers, said: ?Headship is an accountable role, and rightly so, but if we move people on when things aren?t working or the role is redundant, we need to ensure they and their families are protected during the change.?

Before shooting, Zimmerman called cops 'disgusting'

Gary W. Green / Epa File / EPA

George Zimmerman critized Sanford, Fla., police as lazy at a public forum in January 2011.

?

By msnbc.com staff and news services

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A year before he shot Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman criticized Sanford, Fla., police as lazy, saying at a public forum that he saw ?disgusting? behavior by officers on ride-alongs.

He also contended the department covered up the beating of a black homeless man by the son of a white officer.

"I would just like to state that the law is written in black and white," Zimmerman said during a 90-second statement to city commissioners at a community forum. "It should not and cannot be enforced in the gray for those that are in the thin blue line."

The forum took place on Jan. 8, 2011, days after a video of the beating went viral on the Internet and then-Sanford Police Chief Brian Tooley was forced to retire. Tooley's department faced criticism for dragging its feet in arresting Justin Collison, the son of a police lieutenant, in the beating.

The Miami Herald?obtained a clip of a recording of the meeting and first reported details from the community forum Wednesday. The Associated Press also obtained a copy of the tape and reported details.

Zimmerman's public comments could be important because Martin?s parents and supporters contend the neighborhood watch volunteer singled Martin out because he was black. Zimmerman has a Peruvian mother and a white father. His supporters have said he is not racist.

Miami Herald: Listen to Zimmerman's January 2011 comments at community forum

At the community forum, Zimmerman said he witnessed "disgusting" behavior by officers when he was part of a ride-along program.

Security camera video just minutes before the confrontation with George Zimmerman

?The officer showed me his favorite hiding spots for taking naps, explained to me that he doesn?t carry a long gun in his vehicle because, in his words, ?anything that requires a long gun requires a lot of paperwork, and you?re going to find me as far away from it.?

?He took two lunch breaks and attended a going-away party for one of his fellow officers.?

Zimmerman also said Tooley should be denied a pension.

?I would like to know what actions the commission is taking to repeal Mr. Tooley?s pension. I am not asking you to repeal his pension. I believe he has already forfeited his pension by his illegal cover-up, corruption and what happened in his department.?

Report: 4 Martin shooting witnesses change story

Mark O?Mara, Zimmerman?s lawyer in the Martin shooting, said his client was concerned about fairness.

?I think he was upset with the cops, because they treated the homeless guy poorly and treated Collison very well,? O?Mara told the Miami Herald on Wednesday. ?At the [community] meeting, he was like, ?Hey, what are you doing????

Sanford Interim Police Chief Richard Myers said in a statement Wednesday it would be ?inappropriate? to draw any conclusions from Zimmerman?s January 2011 comments at the forum.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for shooting Martin on Feb. 26 in Sanford. The 17-year-old Martin was walking back to a townhome where he was staying when he got into a confrontation with Zimmerman, who shot him in the chest at close range.

Zimmerman, who claims the shooting was self-defense, was initially not arrested. But after protests around the country and an investigation by a state prosecutor, he was charged.

Tooley's successor, Bill Lee, temporarily resigned his post following a no-confidence vote by city commissioners.

Lee offered to resign permanently, but commissioners turned down his request. He is on paid leave.

Prosecutors handling the case against Zimmerman on Wednesday asked a judge to keep some evidence from the public, including the results of an unspecified? test police conducted on Zimmerman the day after the shooting and the identities and phone numbers of 22 witnesses.

Facebook (for PlayStation Vita)

Facebook, the world's most popular and valuable social network, comes to the Sony PlayStation Vita ($249, 4 stars)?in the form of a free app that lets you stay connected with friends, family, and acquaintances. It joins the PS Vita's burgeoning app marketplace where you can also find LiveTweet?(Free, 4 stars), Netflix?($7.99, 3 stars), Paint Park?(Free, 3 stars), and Skype?(Free, 3.5 Stars). Facebook for PlayStation Vita is certainly worth a download if you're Facebook fan, but a few limitations keep it from fully duplicating the functionality found on the main site.

Setup and Interface
You begin by logging in with your Facebook credentials. After doing so, Facebook for PlayStation Vita brings up a blue-and-white interface which is similar to the desktop version. It contains a few layout tweaks that make it more conducive for mobile use. Across the top of the interface, for example, you'll find a drop-down box (that lets you view Most Recent, Status Updates, Photos, Links), and Home, Notifications, and Account Settings icons.

Icons located on the right side of the screen let you quickly access media, messages, friends/friend requests, and the news feed. There's no Events icon, which is a huge loss for me as I mainly use Facebook to keep track of significant happenings within my circle of friends. I like that you can tap the Facebook icon to hide the other icons to free up some screen real estate. Unfortunately, you can't manage account settings from within the app. Instead, you must visit the Facebook's website (you're directed to the mobile version) to make changes, which isn't nearly as PS Vita-friendly as the app.

The Facebook for PlayStation Vita Experience
Facebook for PlayStation Vita lets you visit walls to see updates, likes, and comments, or check out a person's information page. The app, naturally, leverages the PlayStation's touchscreen, so you can swipe down to refresh feeds, or swipe through photo galleries. You can also upload photos stored on your memory card?a nice touch?but you can't tag others.

You cannot, however, upload video, which I consider an oversight considering that the PS Vita shoots video. Another gripe: You also can't view as many older messages as you can when visiting Facebook on a computer. I tried to find a message that a friend sent me a few weeks ago, but the app wouldn't pull messages from that far back. I was able to find it on my PC, however. You're also unable to share content that other people post, which is a limitation that the Facebook Android app also suffers (the iOS version, however, lets you share content).

Social Networking on the Go
Facebook for PlayStation Vita is solid for causal Facebook use, but devoted users may find it too limited in certain areas. If you need to message a friend, upload an image, or update your status while away from a computer it does the job well?just don't expect to do much else.

In order to save the planet you and your family must suffer..Only ...

http://www.andysrant.com/2012/05/gillard-government-website-in-order-to-save-the-planet-you-and-your-family-must-suffer.html

Well done to the?Daily Telegraph?for exposing this disgraceful Government website that advocates its citizens should be made to?suffer?in order to save the planet.

?People should wear jumpers, use blankets, play board games and walk more to save on energy bills this winter, a Federal Government website says.

But the suggestions are ?very condescending? and overlook the cost of living struggles of many Victorian families, organisations that help the vulnerable say.

The?Living Greener website?tells people that choosing jumpers and blankets over heating, board games over video games, and walking and cycling over driving ?can make a difference to how much winter?s bite will hurt your wallet?.

It also suggests drawing up shopping lists will prevent food being wasted.

Having fun ?unplugged?, such as playing board games instead of the Xbox, will also save on bills.

?During winter?s coldest months, many of us chill out watching TV, playing gaming consoles, or cooking a hearty meal,? it says.

?Most of this fun comes with a price tag ? on the planet and our energy bills.?

You see, our current federal government is walking in step with the likes of the?WWF, Worldvison,?the UNEP, and other eco-leftard groups who all propose the same radical aims: to extend the powers of government; to massively raise taxes; to weaken if not completelydestroy the capitalist system; to curtail personal freedom; to?massively redistributeincome both domestically and internationally; to bring ever-closer the advent of an eco-fascist New World Order.

Victorian Council of Social Service chief executive Cath Smith said people in rented houses could do little about their drafty, energy-sapping surrounds.

And those struggling the most likely couldn?t read the advice.

?Most of those doing it tough probably aren?t going to be logging into a website anyway,? she said.

?They won?t be able to afford to have broadband at home.?

Extremist green campaigning group WWF ? endorsed by no less a body than the European Space Agency ? has stated that economic growth should be abandoned, that citizens of the world?s wealthy nations should prepare for poverty and that?all?the human race?s energy should be produced as renewable electricity within 38 years from now.

Most astonishingly of all, the green hardliners demand that the enormous numbers of wind farms, tidal barriers and solar powerplants required under their plans should somehow be built while at the same time severely rationing supplies of concrete, steel, copper and glass.

The WWF presents these demands in itsjust-issued?Living Planet Report for 2012. It?s a remarkable document, not least for the fact that it is formally endorsed for the first time by the European Space Agency (ESA) ? an organisation which would cease to exist in any meaningful form if the document?s recommendations were to be carried out.

The report is also unusual in that it seeks to set policy on economics and energy, but doesn?t anywhere give any figures expressed in units of energy (watt-hours, joules etc) or currency (dollars, euros or what have you). Instead the WWF activists prefer to base their argument on various indices invented either by themselves or by other international non- or quasi-governmental organisations.

????

this is truth..this what they want for us?because?of CO2 in the atmosphere..?harmless?CO2..if its cold put on a jumper..i thought everything was warming? :)

global poverty is the end game?because?then they can bring in whatever they want..

and the ESA..the?space?agency of all things agrees with the WWF..um..please?explain?

Regulators probe bank's role in Facebook IPO

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Regulators are examining whether Morgan Stanley, the investment bank that shepherded Facebook through its highly publicized stock offering last week, selectively informed clients of an analyst's negative report about the company before the stock started trading.

Rick Ketchum, the head of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the self-policing body for the securities industry, said Tuesday that the question is "a matter of regulatory concern" for his organization and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The top securities regulator for Massachusetts, William Galvin, said he had subpoenaed Morgan Stanley. Galvin said his office is investigating whether Morgan Stanley divulged to only some clients that one of its analysts had cut his revenue estimates for Facebook before the stock hit the market on Friday.

The bank said late Tuesday that it "followed the same procedures for the Facebook offering that it follows for all IPOs," referring to initial public offerings of stock. It said that its procedures complied with regulations.

The questions about the role played by Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter for the deal, add to the confusion surrounding Facebook's IPO. In the most hotly anticipated stock debut in years, the offering raised $16 billion for the social networking company, valuing it at $104 billion

On Tuesday, Robert Greifeld, the CEO of the Nasdaq Stock Market, acknowledged to shareholders of Nasdaq's parent company that "clearly we had mistakes within the Facebook listing."

The stock debut, originally set for 11 a.m. EDT Friday, was delayed more than half an hour because of technical problems at Nasdaq. Some brokerages were still sorting out the aftermath on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, our clients continue to feel the effects of this in some cases," said Stephen Austin, a spokesman for Fidelity Investments, one of the country's largest brokerages. Fidelity was still waiting for some Facebook stock orders that it placed on Friday to be executed. Fidelity's systems had performed normally, Austin said.

In the meantime, Facebook stock itself has been a disappointment. It fell $3.03 on Tuesday to close at $31 and has now fallen $7, or more than 18 percent, from its offering price of $38. It managed to add just 23 cents in its first hours of trading on Friday, then suffered a big decline on Monday.

The Reuters news service reported Tuesday that a Morgan Stanley analyst, Scott Devitt, cut his estimate for Facebook's revenue this year to $4.85 billion from more than $5 billion earlier. Reuters reported that it was unclear whether Morgan Stanley had told only select clients about the reduced estimate.

Reuters reported that the analyst cut his figures for Facebook while the company's executives, including founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, were shopping the stock to potential investors in the weeks ahead of the IPO, a process known in investing as a road show.

Morgan Stanley, in its statement, did not specifically address which clients might have been told about a reduced estimate from one of its analysts. It said that "a significant number" of analysts, including those from other firms underwriting the stock issue, had reduced their estimates for Facebook to reflect publicly available information about the company.

That was a reference to a May 9 regulatory filing in which Facebook said a shift by many Facebook users toward mobile devices might limit its revenue growth. Social media companies have struggled to make as much money as they would like from mobile advertising. Advertising accounts for more than 80 percent of Facebook's overall revenue.

Morgan Stanley also said that revised analyst views were taken into account in setting the stock offering price at $38 per share. Facebook, working with Morgan Stanley, first set a range of $28 to $35 for the offering price, then raised the range to $34 to $38 before setting it at $38 on the night before the IPO.

When the stock started trading Friday, it jumped several dollars, but quickly fell back toward $38. It never crossed below that level on its first day, and outside analysts said that was probably because Morgan Stanley, eager to avoid the embarrassment of a first-day decline in the stock price, had rushed in with thousands of buy orders at $38.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday night that Facebook's chief financial officer, David Ebersman, decided shortly before the stock debut to raise the number of shares the company would offer by 25 percent. The Journal, citing people familiar with the planning of the stock offering, also reported that Morgan Stanley had assured Ebersman there was plenty of demand for the stock.

A spokesman for Facebook Inc., which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., said late Tuesday that the company had no comment.

The SEC had already said on Friday that it was looking into problems surrounding the IPO. On Tuesday, the agency's chairman, Mary Schapiro, said: "I think there is a lot of reason to have confidence in our markets and in the integrity of how they operate, but there are issues that we need to look at specifically with respect to Facebook."
