Today's launch of Google Drive, official at last, is kind of a relief. Internet rumors and reports have seen the industry discussing the possibility of a consumer-facing cloud storage service called "GDrive," since as far back as 2006. Of course, then, the product in development was an internal-only tool used by Google employees - not the Dropbox-like competitor Google launched today. Still, to say that we've been waiting for GDrive for a long, long, long time would be the understatement of the year.

Seattle (CNN) ? David Wing-Kovarik and his partner, Conrad, were ready to adopt a child.

They moved through all their requirements smoothly, even completing an orientation and training course for prospective parents.

Then they were confronted with their first real stumbling block.

?Our adoption agent said, ?Well, you both look the same on paper, so who?s going to be the parent??? Wing-Kovarik recalls.

In Arizona, where the couple lived at the time, only individuals and legally married couples may adopt from the U.S. foster care system. But because a same-sex couple cannot legally marry in the state, only one parent can be granted legal rights to the child.

?We saw (it) as a disadvantage to the child,? said Wing-Kovarik, 47. ?We, frankly, got very angry about it when we thought about everybody else that was in the (training) class. None of them were asked this question. And it came down to the fact that we were a male couple. This was when we first experienced how being that gay couple just adds to the complexity of the whole process. It makes it much harder.?

In 18 states and the District of Columbia, same-sex couples can jointly petition to adopt a child. But in the other states, such as Arizona, the law either restricts joint adoption or is unclear.

That only adds confusion and frustration to what is already a ?mind-numbing? adoption process, Wing-Kovarik said.

?It makes your head spin with the questions that are asked of you, with the forms that you have to fill out,? he said. ?And then you have on top of that the fact that your family might not be that mom-and-dad home. You?re that gay or lesbian family ? and the questions begin to change.?

Wing-Kovarik and his partner did their homework and were eventually able to adopt two sibling boys after relocating to Seattle for Conrad?s new job. But it was a long, arduous and invasive process, one that scares off many other potential parents, Wing-Kovarik said.

?It becomes a daunting experience,? he said. ?It?s why the families don?t always come forward, because they think they?re going to be rejected.?

And to him, that is unacceptable with 107,000 boys and girls waiting for adoption in the United States.

?When you lose that family, you lose an opportunity for a child,? he said. ?They need help. ? That child sitting in foster care year after year after year is not going to their social worker and saying, ?I only want a mom-and-dad home.? ?

Determined to help other families deal with the same obstacles that he had faced, Wing-Kovarik started a nonprofit, Families Like Ours. It began as a simple online resource for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people wanting to foster or adopt. But as word spread about its growing expertise and its success in helping foster placements and adoptions, more diverse people started coming to the group for help.

?It doesn?t matter if you?re gay, straight, pink, purple, orange, polka-dotted, from Mars, from the moon or any other place,? Wing-Kovarik said. ?If you think you can make a difference with these kids, you should be stepping forward to do to this. ?

?It?s unacceptable that families are faced with barriers that are put in their way because of a myth, a misunderstanding, miscommunication ? preventing a child from having a family just because (other people) just don?t like what that family looks like.?

Wing-Kovarik estimates that his group has helped thousands of families ? both gay and straight ? by offering a range of services such as lawyer referrals, case consultations, special-needs classes and tips on therapists and pediatricians. With the help of a nationwide network of volunteers ? many of whom have benefited from the group in the past ? everything is free.

?Families contact us and say, ?I want to do this, how do I do this?? We do two things: find out the answer and figure out how it really works for their specific situation, because they are never the same,? Wing-Kovarik said.

According to the state of Washington, more than 75% of families who have attended a training class through Wing-Kovarik?s group have gone on to be placed with a foster child.

?That is much higher than other agencies,? said Paulette Caswell, adoption and permanency supervisor for the state?s Department of Social and Health Services.

Wing-Kovarik has also become a preferred trainer of the state, training nearly 250 families a year since 2002.

?He has a unique perspective, and families connect to this,? Caswell said. ?And (David?s work) is done for truly altruistic reasons. There is no cost to the state for it. We have others that support us and do a lot of work, but we tend to pay for that service. Families Like Ours does it through donations and grants, and he hasn?t been paid in years. That?s pretty extraordinary.?

Kevin Broderick, a single, gay man, called Families Like Ours when he encountered difficulty finalizing the adoption of his now 13-year-old son, Michael.

?I am 100% sure that if it weren?t for David, I would not have my son,? Broderick said. ?He understands how things should go, but also when they don?t go right, how can we get them back on track? He figured out how to get us over that finish line.?

In 2007, the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law estimates that there were 65,500 adopted children living with a gay parent in the United States. Wing-Kovarik says these homes are really not all that different from traditional mom-and-dad households.

?We?re a two-dad home,? he said. ?On the surface, does it look different? Sure. But when we?re at home, does it look any different than anybody else? No. We argue and fight with the kids to get their homework done and brush their teeth and take a shower and brush their hair. ?Put your shoes on the right feet!? ?Is your backpack packed?? ?Why is your lunch sitting on the floor when the dog is eating it?? Well, that?s the same thing everybody else complains about.?

Wing-Kovarik has had his two boys, Chris and Shawn, since 2002, and he can?t imagine sitting idle while there are so many other foster children who are still stuck in the system.

?Thinking of all of the other Chris and Shawns that are in foster care, and not knowing what?s going to happen to them ? I can?t just walk away from that. ?

?It?s not my job to go in and guarantee what the life of that child?s going to be. It?s simply my job to make sure that child has some sort of hope. ? We?re going to make this match, and we?re going to move forward. And that kid?s going to have as productive a life as we can help that kid have.?

Japan swings back to current account surplus

TOKYO ? Japan swung back to a current account surplus in February after suffering a record deficit in the previous month, official data said Monday.

The surplus in the current account, the broadest measure of trade with the rest of the world, stood at 1.18 trillion yen ($14.4 bn), the finance ministry said.

The latest reading was 30.7 percent lower than a year earlier but largely in line with a 1.15 trillion yen surplus tipped in a poll of economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and the Nikkei business daily.

The country logged a record 437.3 billion yen deficit in January due to lower exports and higher energy costs.

That was Japan?s first deficit since January 2009, when the country posted a then-record shortfall of 132.7 billion yen at the height of the global financial crisis.

Japanese exports have been inching higher on the back of a recovery in the United States, a positive sign for an economy heavily dependent on overseas demand for growth.

The current account measures the value of a country?s imports and foreign investments against the value of its overseas income such as exports of goods and services.

Austin police officer killed at a Walmart

A police officer was fatally shot early Friday at a Walmart store in Austin, Texas, and?a suspect is in custody.

Austin police Chief Art Acevedo said the officer was shot in the neck and died at the scene around 2:30 a.m. Acevedo said the officer was responding to a routine call about a drunk man in the store.

KUT News reported that when the officer arrived at the scene, the suspect began to fight him. The suspect then pulled out a semi-automatic pistol, according to police, and shot the officer in the neck area.

The officer was able to radio for help, KUT said, but he later died in the store.

The officer's name has not been released.

Acevedo said two Walmart employees tackled the suspect after the shooting and held him until another police officer arrived and arrested him.

According to KUT, the officer had two daughters, aged 6 and 10. Acevedo said he would like to see the shooter face murder charges.

"It is a tragedy on Good Friday to lose an officer like this, but it is part of what these men and women do," Acevedo said, according to KWTX.com. "They know when they become a police officer that this is a sacrifice they are willing to make."

The benefits system is being overhauled - we've covered some of the impacts of this already. But one aspect that has gone almost unreported so far is the impact of the changes on how domestic violence refuges are funded.

I have a feature in Inside Housing (my day job!) today, which breaks down what is happening and why.

Some of the changes are directly going to make things more risky for actual victims, as well as the services such as refuges. From next year, for example, a new system is being introduced called universal credit - which will bundle together all sorts of benefits in one, monthly lump sum.

If you are in a couple, both of your benefits will be combined and paid to one of you (with a small number of exceptions). Even for otherwise solid relationships, this is problematic, but the impact for those stuck in abusive relationships should be obvious.

Things are tougher all around - and we also have a front page story today that is about how councils treat women who approach them as homeless as a result of domestic violence. It is now also common for it to take weeks to get a woman into a refuge, where a few days used to be the maximum.

The Scarlet Centre, which is a pan-London service for women experiencing domestic violence, has seen a rise in cases of women being turned away by the homeless persons unit at London councils. Once a week, they are having to get solicitors involved before the councils carry out their basic duties.

Many of the solicitors and domestic violence workers I spoke to put this down to pressure on councils' resources (if they carry out an assessment and find that someone is homeless, or at threat of homelessness, because of domestic violence, they have a duty to put them into temporary housing, while they carry out an investigation into the case. They may then have a duty to provide permanent housing - and there is a shortage of this.)

But a lack of training and myths about domestic violence are also most likely playing a role in this. Vera Baird QC (who was Attorney-General under Labour), had some thoughts on this as well. 'I don't think housing officers are hard-faced people at all. I think it's lack of training or knowledge,' she told me.

Overall, this is not a pretty picture. And there's a whole raft of issues that I didn't have room to get into - such as the cuts to legal aid, which also have people worried, and cuts to translation services which are crucial if you are escaping a relationship and don't speak English.

What is the answer? It seems like issues such as domestic violence have slipped down the political agenda. If we can expose what's going on, can we reverse this?

LHC is back with big energy boost

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is operating again after its winter break.

Early on Thursday, opposing stable beams of protons were smashed into each other at four observation positions.

The total collision energy in these bunches of sub-atomic particles was eight trillion electron volts - a world record.

Scientists expect the big boost in capability to significantly increase the collider's chances of discovering "new physics".

The great expectation is that they will definitively confirm or deny the existence of the Higgs boson, the elusive particle that would help explain why matter has mass.

"The experience of two good years of running at 3.5 TeV per beam gave us the confidence to increase the energy for this year without any significant risk to the machine," explained Steve Myers, the director for accelerators and technology at Cern (European Organization for Nuclear Research).

What is an electronvolt?

• Charged particles tend to speed up in an electric field, defined as an electric potential - or voltage - spread over a distance
• One electron volt (eV) is the energy gained by a single electron as it accelerates through a potential of one volt
• It is a convenient unit of measure for particle accelerators, which speed particles up through much higher electric potentials
• The first accelerators only created bunches of particles with an energy of about a million eV
• The LHC can reach beam energies a million times higher: up to several teraelectronvolts (TeV)
• This is still only the energy in the motion of a flying mosquito
• But LHC beams include trillions of these particles, each travelling at more than 99.999999% of the speed of light

"Now it's over to the experiments to make the best of the increased discovery potential we're delivering them!"

Since first switching on in 2008, operators at the LHC have cautiously increased the energy contained in each of the bunches of protons sent around the 27km collider, which lies beneath the Franco-Swiss border.

It is planned that the collider will collect data until November, after which it will be upgraded during a shutdown period that will last 20 months.

That should result in an operating proton beam energy of 14 trillion electronvolts, or teraelectronvolts - another great leap in capability.

The LHC collaboration hopes to reach that milestone in 2014, re-starting the hunt for novel physics in early 2015.

In the 2012 run of experiments, the Higgs will be a key focus.

Teams working on the two major detectors at the facility announced at the end of last year that they had seen hints of the particle, but stopped short of claiming they had seen it with certainty.

Anticipation was then further heightened a month ago by news that the recently closed Tevatron collider, based at the US national laboratory Fermilab, had also seen a "bump" in its archived data around the same mass region as that observed by the LHC detectors. That is, a particle with a mass of about 125 gigaelectronvolts (GeV; this is about 130 times as heavy as the protons found in atomic nuclei).

The new data collection phase will settle the issue, researchers believe.

Running the LHC at higher energies makes it more likely that Higgs particles, if they exist, will show themselves in the debris of the proton collisions.

"The increase in energy is all about maximising the discovery potential of the LHC," said Cern Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. "And in that respect, 2012 looks set to be a vintage year for particle physics."

NEW YORK — Aziz Ansari has been keeping pretty busy lately, working on everything from his full-time "Parks and Recreation" gig to a buzzed-about cameo in Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Otis" music video last year.

After Ansari's feature in the Watch the Throne clip and his and Kanye's joint participation in Nike's Kobe System videos, fans are speculating about the pair's next step together. Could a musical partnership be in the works?

Not anytime soon, according to Ansari. MTV News caught up with the comedian in Central Park, where he was taking time off from his busy schedule to rep his inner Tom Haverford and ceremonially mow a stretch of grass for New York City's Central Park Conservancy.

After safely dismounting his lawnmower, Ansari told us of his pal 'Ye, "We [collaborated] on the video, but music-wise, not at this point. I haven't dipped my hat into that ring."

In the meantime, divert your attention to Ansari's newest standup special, "Dangerously Delicious." Following in the footsteps of Louis C.K., Aziz's hour-long special was released exclusively for download on his site for $5 and is as fresh as it is hilarious. Children: Better protection from influenza with improved vaccine

ScienceDaily (Apr. 3, 2012) ? An intranasal vaccine that includes four weakened strains of influenza could do a better job in protecting children from the flu than current vaccines, Saint Louis University research shows.

Before each influenza season, scientists predict which strains of flu will be circulating and make a trivalent vaccine that includes three strains of influenza -- two of influenza A and one of influenza B.

The ability to add another strain of influenza B without compromising the vaccine's ability to protect against the other three strains will allow scientists make a better vaccine, said Robert Belshe, M.D., professor of infectious diseases at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and the corresponding author of the research article.

"The bottom line is adding another strain to make a quadrivalent vaccine improves our ability to protect against flu and doesn't reduce the body's immune response to the other strains," said Belshe, who also directs Saint Louis University's Center for Vaccine Development.

"It should bring us better protection because there's less guess work than in the standard trivalent vaccine."

Children are more susceptible than adults to influenza from one of the B strains, which change less often than A strain viruses. Some winters, influenza B viruses -- Victoria or Yamagata -- cause most of the flu in children and significant infection in adults, Belshe said.

Preventing flu in children is key to protecting the entire population. "We think the most important way for flu to spread is through school-aged children," Belshe said.

In the 1980s, influenza B split into the two circulating lineages of virus, which have evolved into viruses that are quite different. Some years both B viruses or the B strain that doesn't match the vaccine circulate, which means the vaccine doesn't protect people from getting the flu.

"There are these two very different strains of influenza B that don't cross protect. Vaccinating against one strain of influenza B does little to protect against the other," Belshe said.

"It has not been possible to predict which strain has circulated. In the last 10 years, we predicted right five times. So you can flip a coin and do as well."

Previously, manufacturers had not had the capacity to produce a vaccine that protects against four strains of flu, but that is no longer the case, Belshe said.

The researchers tested versions of the FluMist vaccine, which is sprayed in the nose and contains live flu viruses that have been attenuated or weakened so they don't cause infection. The intranasal vaccine is made by MedImmune.

The nasal spray vaccine was tested in about 2,300 children between 2 and 19 years of age. The children were randomized to receive one of three vaccines: a vaccine containing four strains of influenza -- two of influenza A and two of influenza B, or one of two vaccines that contained both influenza A strains and one of each of the influenza B strains. Researchers looked at the safety and antibody response to both influenza A and B viruses in children of different age groups who were vaccinated.

Those children who receive vaccine containing four strains of flu had as robust of an immune response as those who received the vaccine that contained three strains. In addition, Belshe noted no clinically significant difference the safety of the vaccines, which were well tolerated.

"We saw stuffy noses, which we know is associated with FluMist, and an occasional low grade fever, which is similar to other childhood vaccines," Belshe said.

On Feb. 28, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved MedImmune's quadrivalent flu vaccine for use in people between the ages of 2 and 49. The vaccine could be ready for use during the 2013-2014 influenza season, pending a recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a group that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about vaccination issues.

An injected flu vaccine designed to protect against four strains of flu -- instead of the current three -- also is in the works, Belshe said.

Findings were published electronically ahead of print in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. Belshe has been a member of a speaker's bureau and received research grants and consulting fees from MedImmune, which sponsored the study.
