Avastin Disappoints Against Ovarian Cancer

Flickr user theseoduke

Avastin, the blockbuster drug that just lost approval for treating breast cancer, now looks disappointing against ovarian cancer, too.?

Two studies find that it does not improve survival for most ovarian cancer patients and keeps their disease from worsening for only a few months. And it has more side effects.
??

European regulators approved Avastin for ovarian cancer last week. But the drug?s maker, Genentech, says the results of the studies do not make U.S. approval likely. Without that, insurers may not pay for treatment. Avastin can cost $100,000 a year.
??

Avastin can still be sold for some colon, lung, kidney and brain cancers. The studies on ovarian cancer are in Thursday?s New England Journal of Medicine.

KY & IN agree on plan to finance and build Ohio River bridges ...

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) -?Kentucky and Indiana have reached consensus on a basic plan to finance and build the Ohio River Bridges Project, keeping the project on target to begin construction in 2012.

Under an agreement in principle reached by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and leaders of the Louisville and Southern Indiana Bridges Authority, each state would take the lead in financing and overseeing construction of one half of the project, among the largest transportation projects in the United States.

"This is a big step to having an agreement in principle between the two governors on how the project is going to be paid for," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said Thursday.

Kentucky would be responsible for financing and constructing the downtown portion of the project, a new I-65 bridge, a re-decked Kennedy Bridge, modernization of the Kennedy Interchange, and expansion of the I-65 approach in Indiana.

"Indiana is going is going to be responsible for financing and constructing the East End portion of the project which is the new bridge and the new highway approaches including a tunnel in eastern Jefferson County," Fischer said.

That includes a new bridge near Utica, IN, and Prospect, KY; a new highway linking the Lee Hamilton Expressway and Gene Snyder Freeway; and a tunnel in Eastern Jefferson County.

The Bridges Authority would help coordinate, monitor and ensure an interface between the two procurements, which would continue to be carried out as one project under a single financial plan.?

At its October meeting, the Bridges Authority reviewed and discussed six potential delivery options for the project, and then began a process of building consensus between the states on their preferred approach.? Since then, the state sponsors have worked diligently, both internally and in joint discussions, to evaluate different scenarios.

In the course of these discussions, the states decided the landmark project could best be advanced through separate procurements, each of which is expected to take advantage of innovative contracting methods that can save time and money.

"This is an enormous step in our progress to begin building both bridges in 2012," said Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear.? "By playing to each state's strengths, we are lowering the cost of the project, increasing competition, and speeding the construction of these critical bridges.? I appreciate Gov. Mitch Daniels for his efforts to bring this project to fruition, as well as the work of both states' transportation leadership and the Bridges Authority."

A cost-savings plan outlined last January by the two governors and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has led to a further reduction in the project's estimated construction price tag from $4.1 billion to $2.6 billion, a $1.5 billion savings. The estimated price tag for each half, the downtown and East End, is virtually the same, $1.3 billion.

"The duel procurement approach of downtown and east offers several distinct advantages.? first it increases competition," Fischer said.

That includes more competition from construction companies, which is expected to drive down the cost of the overall massive project.

Both states plan to use a combination of traditional transportation funds and tolls on the new and improved crossings to pay for construction and financing of the project.

The Bridges Authority will incorporate the relevant cost, funding and revenue components into its financial plan for the project, which is expected to be completed soon on the basis of the agreement announced today.

A more detailed update on these developments will be shared at the Bridges Authority's upcoming quarterly meeting scheduled for next Thursday, January 5, at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

Despite all the good news, tolls are still on the table, but there are no specifics yet.

"For the person who's using the bridge day in and day out, a dollar is still the target.? It's not finalized.? We've seen some models with it as high as $1.50, but a dollar is where we'd like to see all that, and that's the details we'll see worked out in the next several weeks," Fischer said.

The project needs a lot to happen in 2012 to make things go without a hitch.

"One of the most important steps right now will be in the General Assembly," said Congressman John Yarmuth.

That starts in January of 2012.? In April, the federal government is expected to weigh in on a revamped environmental impact study.? If they approve it, that could actually void the River Fields lawsuit.

If the state general assembly and federal government approve the spending and environmental aspect, the project could open for bids in the summer of 2012, with a groundbreaking possible in late 2012.

Review: Scrutinizing your presence on Facebook (AP)

NEW YORK ? Here's one way to sum up 2011: I added 71 people as Facebook friends, shared 26 links and commented on 98 of my friends' status updates. I was tagged in 33 photos and added 18 of my own to the site.

I also attempted to keep up with Facebook's endless redesigns, most recently with the introduction of Timeline. With it, your Facebook profile offers highlights from your past, not just your recent happenings. Last week, I urged all of you to carefully curate your Timelines to avoid coming across as vain or revealing forgotten skeletons.

This week, I will go through other ways to manage your life on Facebook.

It's good to take stock of your Facebook presence from time to time, given how quickly the site changes its features and settings and how easily many of us add people to our lists of friends. Even if you haven't switched to Timeline yet, you can still follow these steps to review what you're really revealing about yourself.

WHO ARE YOUR FRIENDS?

In the early days, I was very judicious about whom I accepted as Facebook friends. People I hadn't met in person, relatives I hadn't spoken to in years and friends who simply annoyed me didn't make the cut. Now, my friends list includes people I haven't been in touch with since college and others I met only once at a party, wedding or trip.

Do all of them need to know ? or even care ? that I started watching "How I Met Your Mother" or ate an undercooked hot dog at 3 a.m.? Should they see photos of me at a recent holiday bash?

Maybe not.

Now is a good time to go through your friends list to see who ought to disappear. A friend's significant other long after they broke up? An acquaintance who has 1,000 friends and never interacts with you on Facebook? People who tighten their privacy settings so much that you see no more than any stranger would?

Gone, goodbye, nice to know you. Facebook won't alert the friends you drop.

ALL FRIENDS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL

You may want to share an ultrasound of your fetus only with family members, or share party photos with close friends. Other rants and milestones may be appropriate for everyone.

Facebook has new tools to make it easier to create subgroups such as family and co-workers. Start by going to "lists" on the left side of your Facebook home page (you may have to click on "more" to see it).

Facebook had automatically added 103 of my friends to a "New York Area" list and suggested dozens of others who hadn't told Facebook their location. The suggestions were surprisingly accurate; the inaccurate ones were for those who used to live in New York but have moved on. I added 31 so that I can broadcast New York happenings only to them and spare my Californian and European friends.

Next came "Close Friends." Again, the tool was pretty good at suggesting people with whom I have interacted the most, online and offline. One factor is whether you've appeared in photos together. Facebook won't reveal who made your list of close friends, so don't worry about keeping people off.

I went through a similar exercise for "Family," choosing to include only the closer ones I'd share more with. In this case, those you're adding will be told, so if you don't want that known, create a new list rather use the one Facebook already set up.

To do that, click "lists," then "Create List." I added one for cousins, two for college, one for work, one for my running group and one for those I still see from my days in Washington.

Some people are in multiple groups, others in none. These lists make it easier to share posts with only a subset of my Facebook friends. I can also use the lists to see only posts from specific groups.

Facebook also has a "Restricted" list where you can dump those you don't want to share much with. Facebook promises not to reveal who gets added.

WHAT ARE YOU SHARING?

Update your biographical information. The current city is important because it's what Facebook uses to create the list of nearby friends. Now is also the time to say if your work has changed or if you no longer want your birthday revealed.

Look for the globe icon if you want to share certain details only with certain people, such as friends of friends or those on one of your lists.

You should also go through your lists of favorite books, music and TV shows. Replace Milli Vanilli with Justin Bieber if you want to seem youthful and hip.

While you're at it, pare down the companies and products you've decided to "like" over the years. Be careful about what you're endorsing. Facebook may use your name and profile photo next to ads that your friends see. So if you've liked Target's page, for example, your friends could see your photo next to an ad from Target.

CONTROLLING WHAT YOU SHARE

Look for the arrow at the upper left corner and select "Account Settings."

Begin with "General" on the left and check to make sure everything's up to date. Click "Edit" if you need to change anything such as your email address.

Then go one by one down the list on your left. If you're not sure what something is, click "Edit" for details. Under "Apps," get rid of apps you no longer use so that they will no longer have access to your data. Under "Notifications," choose what types of activities Facebook sends you alerts on.

After that, go back to that arrow and select "Privacy Settings."

Under "How You Connect," you can make it more difficult for people to reach you by restricting their ability to send you messages or make friend requests. You can also prevent people from posting on your profile. You can tweak "How Tags Work" and insist on reviewing photos or posts others tag you in before they appear on your profile. In most cases, you can find out more about what's happening by clicking on the item.

Finally, think about whether you want your list of friends visible to strangers on Facebook. If you have switched to Timeline, click on "See All" within your box of friends, then click "Edit" to narrow who sees it. For traditional profiles, hover over the friends box and click on the pencil that emerges. Then click on the globe next to your friends.

CHECKING IT TWICE

Test how others see your profile by going to "View As..." at the top of the profile. Those with Timeline should first click the wheel next to "Activity Log." Enter the name of a close friend, a co-worker or a random acquaintance to make sure no one is seeing too much. Click "public" to see how everyone else sees the profile.

Facebook changes so often, so don't be surprised that by the time you figure it all out, the service unveils another redesign that may affect what you've already done. There used to be a way to prevent everyone from sending you friend requests, for instance. I'm now limited to blocking specific individuals.

It's good to go through this exercise on a regular basis ? annually, quarterly or more often if you can. Be mindful that Facebook pushes for more openness, so the restrictions available today might be gone tomorrow.

Now you need one for long (demographic) waves. As in, Generation A grows up during a crash, saves strongly, creates conditions for growth. Generation B thinks their parents are foolish Scrooges, spends, increasing growth but building up debt. Generation C sees grows up during debt-fueled growth, enjoys the good times, but then has to deal with the crash. Repeat.

  2. B_Lev Says:

A number of the cycle charts show ?rising inflation? as a characteristic of an economy slowing/ entering a recession. At the same time, the charts suggest stocks and commodity prices start falling. Is this contradiction apparent?

Why are prices increasing during a recession when (presumably) velocity slows? Outside of the 70?s stagflation or Volcker ?ringing out? inflation by inducing a recession (contractionary monetary) in the early 80?s, why would we associate a recession with increasing prices? Text Book. Inflation is expansionary. Right?

China says its most wanted man admits crimes (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's most wanted man, who was deported from Canada in July after a decades-long legal battle, has admitted to his crimes and will now be handed over to prosecutors, state media reported Friday.

Beijing had sought the deportation of Lai Changxing for years, accusing him of running a multi-billion dollar smuggling ring in the southeastern city of Xiamen in the 1990s in one of China's biggest political scandals in decades.

Nothing has been heard of him since he was returned to China over the summer.

A brief report on state radio's website (www.cnr.cn) said the probe into his crimes had finished and that Lai would now be handed over to Xiamen prosecutors.

"Lai Changxing and other mainstay members of his criminal clique candidly confessed the facts of their smuggling and bribery crimes," state radio said.

The "legal rights" of Lai and the other suspects were "fully guaranteed," with Lai able to meet with his lawyer, the report added.

The investigation team carried out the probe "fairly and in accordance with the law," it said.

Lai may face life imprisonment, state media has reported. But some legal experts and human rights activists have said it was unlikely Lai could receive a fair trial in China.

The report did not say when Lai's case may come to trial.

The probe found that between 1996 and 1999, Lai and his accomplices smuggled cars, oil, chemicals, cigarettes and other goods and bribed "dozens" of government officials, state radio added.

"The figure involved was enormous," it said, without providing other details.

Lai, whose case had plagued Sino-Canadian relations, was sent back after a Canadian court dismissed concerns he could be tortured or executed back home.

Lai fled to Canada with his family in 1999 and claimed refugee status, saying the allegations against him were politically motivated.

China had promised Canada Lai would not be tortured or executed and that Canadian officials would have access to him.

Lai's alleged crimes occurred in the special economic zone of Xiamen in Fujian province in the mid-1990s when Jia Qinglin, now the ruling Communist Party's fourth most senior leader, was the province's Party boss.

Beijing has accused Lai's business empire, the Yuanhua Group, of bribing officials to allow a massive smuggling ring in a scandal that implicated more than 200 senior figures, including Jia's wife, Lin Youfang. She denied any wrongdoing.

Lai admitted in a 2009 interview with Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper that he had avoided taxes by exploiting loopholes in the law, but he denies bribery charges. He said he would have been executed had he not been in Canada.

China put more than 300 suspects on trial and sentenced 14 to death, including provincial officials and a former vice minister of public security, in a case Beijing has used for a propaganda campaign against corruption.

Argentine leader's cancer forces her to delegate (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Argentina's president cracked jokes and sounded optimistic Wednesday after her thyroid cancer diagnosis was announced, but she's clearly struggling with the need to delegate power while she recovers from next week's surgery.

Cristina Fernandez's thyroid removal operation, scheduled for Jan. 4, is expected to be as routine as cancer surgery can be. Doctors predict a speedy recovery, since papillary thyroid carcinoma detected before it spreads is highly curable without chemotherapy.

Still, the idea of leaving her vice president in charge for 20 days appears to pose a daunting challenge for Fernandez, who has never been comfortable delegating.

She praised her constitutional successor, former Economy Minister Amado Boudou, for sharing her political ideas, but jokingly warned him to "be careful what you do" as interim president and made clear that she'll be keeping a close watch on things while recovering at her home in Patagonia.

"The truth is that I ? everything is too much. You can't be in charge of everything," Fernandez acknowledged. "The body can't handle it."

Indeed. Despite the doctors' assurances, simply combining the words "cancer" and "Cristina" had Argentines worried about the mortality of a leader who has been virtually alone at the top. Even before the death of her husband, Nestor Kirchner, of a heart attack last year, she had grown accustomed to ruling through emergency decrees after consulting only a small circle of loyal advisers.

"It affects me deeply," said Cecilia Maldonado, a young office worker in downtown Buenos Aires. "Because if you begin to think about her having to leave the presidency, or something happening to her ... there isn't anybody who could replace all the energy that she's put into raising up this government."

Fernandez and Kirchner were Argentina's ultimate power couple, whose fervent supporters say they've done more for the country during their combined two terms in office than anyone since legendary strongman Juan Domingo Peron and his wife, Evita, used the country's post-World War II riches to move a generation of working people into the middle class.

Fernandez, 58, dispelled doubts about her survival skills after Kirchner's death and won re-election by a landslide in October, in part because voters saw the grieving widow as indomitable ? the only one capable of containing Argentina's social pressures and keeping on track the economy, which grew at more than 9 percent this year.

Argentina has come back strong from its disastrous devaluation and debt default a decade ago, reducing poverty, unemployment and the wealth gap, and directing billions of dollars in revenue to the poor through social programs. But many worry that such achievements could disappear when Fernandez leaves office.

"Just when it seems like we're getting a little better," complained Maldonado, reacting to the news. "Ten years ago, I lived through 2001, and I really suffered. ... Only now can you see things improving, and plan for the future."

The cancer diagnosis worries Argentines precisely "because it's a one-person government ... where only the president makes decisions," said Mariel Fornoni, director of the Management & Fit consulting firm. "That's why there's so much doubt about what might happen."

Still, Fornoni said, it's clear that the president's planned medical leave is irrelevant, and that no real decision will be made without consulting her.

Fernandez spoke of her cancer diagnosis as she announced new revenue transfers to provincial governments, seeking to project an image of normalcy. Several of the gathered governors and ministers who gave her an extended standing ovation said they were relieved to see her in good spirits and fully in command.

"She seems optimistic, making jokes. Clearly she's not going to let anything slow her down these next four years," said Jorge Capitanich, governor of the northern state of Chaco.

Just behind her during her speech was an architect's rendering of an image of Evita Peron that now towers over the widest avenue in Buenos Aires. Comparisons weren't lost on Argentines, who learn as children that Evita died in 1951 because she neglected her own health while caring for the poor, letting uterine cancer spread until it was incurable.

The president's doctors said Fernandez was told of her cancer on Dec. 22, the same day that her newly inaugurated Senate majority, racing to approve new laws ahead of its summer recess, significantly increased several executive powers.

And while Fernandez talked of delegating on Wednesday, she reversed herself practically in the same breath.

"We're going to keep going with the same energy we've always had. We need to face things as we've always done, taking charge of everything that's our responsibility, and everything else as well," she said. "I'm going to keep working the same as always, for Argentina, for nothing other than her, and for all the Argentines."

Federal judge blocks Calif. low-carbon fuels rule (AP)

FRESNO, Calif. ? California officials say they will ask a federal judge to stay his ruling that blocks the state from enforcing the first-in-the-nation mandate for cleaner, low-carbon fuels.

In a decision issued Thursday, Fresno-based U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence O'Neill said the low-carbon fuel rules favor biofuels produced in the state. He said that violates the U.S. Constitution's commerce clause by discriminating against crude oil and biofuels producers located outside California.

California Air Resources Board spokesman Dave Clegern disagreed, saying the fuel rule is "an evenhanded standard that encourages the use of cleaner low carbon fuels by regulating fuel-providers in California."

He said the board plans to ask the judge to stay the ruling, and appeal if necessary to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Out-of-state fuels producers hailed the decision as a win for California drivers.

"Today's decision ... struck down a misguided policy that would have resulted in even higher fuel costs for Californian consumers while increasing the cost of business throughout the state," Consumer Energy Alliance Executive Vice President Michael Whatley said.

Beginning this year, the standard has required petroleum refiners, companies that blend fuel and distributors to gradually increase the cleanliness of the fuel they sell in California.

The board previously had said the low-carbon mandate will reduce California's dependence on petroleum by 20 percent and account for one-tenth of the state's goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

The regulation does not mandate specific alternative fuels. Rather, it assigns a so-called carbon-intensity score to various fuels. By 2020 all vehicles fuels, on average, must be 10 percent less carbon-intensive than gasoline is now.

The Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, the California Dairy Campaign, the Renewable Fuels Associations and other groups filed a similar lawsuit in the same court in 2009. Their complaint said the regulation conflicted with the federal Renewable Fuel Standard and would close California's borders to corn ethanol made in other states.

The fuel standard "discriminates against out-of-state and foreign crude oil while giving an economic advantage to in-state crude oil," O'Neil wrote Thursday.

The nonprofit legal organization Earthjustice, which was not party to the suit but works on climate-related issues, said the state's clean energy programs are consistent with federal law.

"California is leading the way on cleaner fuels and a cleaner power grid," Earthjustice President Trip Van Noppen said. "It is not surprising that the oil industry is attacking these programs, but like previous attacks in the courts and at the ballot box, we expect this one ultimately to fail."

The Art of the Science Tattoo

Image: Used with permission from Science Ink by Carl Zimmer ? 2011

It all started with a summer pool party and a Harvard neuroscientist who prefers to be called Bob. Bob?aka Sandeep Robert Datta?was splashing around the pool with his kids when science writer Carl Zimmer noticed an image of DNA inked to his shoulder. It was not a surprising choice for a tattoo, since Bob studies the DNA of fruit flies. But it turned out there was more to it. In an excerpt from the introduction to his latest book, "Science Ink: Tattoos of the Science Obsessed," Zimmer explains the science and story behind his friend's tattoo:

"DNA stores information for making proteins in its rung-like units called bases. There are four different bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). It takes three consecutive bases to code a single amino acid, the building block of protein. There are 20 different kinds of amino acids in humans, each abbreviated with a letter. The letter E, for example, stands for glutamate. Bob explained to me that the tattoo spelled out the initials of his wife, Eliza Emond Edelsberg."

Was there a subculture of other scientists sporting body art, Zimmer wondered, intrigued. The question led to a query on his blog,?The Loom. Pictures began pouring in, a torrent of tattoos. He received roughly 1,000 over the next four years?so many that he turned them into the book.

Proof again that scientists are a creative, edgy tribe, eager to express themselves beyond the conference lecture and the journal abstract. (For other examples, see?this?and?this.)

This week, Carl Zimmer spoke with PBS NewsHour correspondent Hari Sreenivasan about Zimmer's entry into this world of body art, the process of researching this book and some of the surprises he encountered along the way. Bonus extra: Zimmer reveals the kind of tattoo he'll get if he ever succumbs to the needle himself.

The tattoos in the book are wildly varied.

? Click here to see a slide show of selections from the book

Some of the tattoos are simple and clean, some are old and fading, some are big and colorful and wild. They tell stories of galaxies and molecules and disease research and mathematical equations and unusual species. And they delve into the history of science. One scientist has a tattoo of the original drawing from the patent for Thomas Edison's first phonograph. A neuroscientist whose father died of Lou Gehrig's disease has the neuron that gets destroyed by the disease inked onto her foot.

How many science writers can boast an art book that digs so deeply into personal stories while celebrating such a broad spectrum of scientific research? Then again, how many science writers have a tapeworm named after them? (Hari asked Zimmer about that, too.)

Activist's death leads void in Dominican Republic (AP)

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic ? Sonia Perez was the undisputed champion of people of Haitian descent living in the Dominican Republic, fighting deep discrimination and helping them get birth certificates, housing and education.

Her passing earlier this month of a heart attack at age 48 has left many activists wondering who will carry on her work at a crucial time.

"I don't see who can replace her," said Edwin Paraison, who worked with Pierre and was Haiti's former minister of Haitians living abroad. "Sonia is the kind of woman who is born once a century."

People of Haitian descent, or even just darker skin, have long been condemned to menial jobs, subject to deportation and denied access to school and jobs in the Dominican Republic.

In 30 years of activism, Pierre helped countless people obtain birth certificates over the resistance of government officials. She led marches and organized rallies, fighting for better conditions for people in the sugar cane camps, or bateys, where she grew up.

Pierre's passionate activism drew death threats, but it also earned her the 2006 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award and the 2010 International Women of Courage Award, which she received while standing between first lady Michelle Obama and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which share the island of Hispaniola, have long had a contentious relationship.

Haiti's military invaded the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo in 1822, occupying its neighbor for 22 years. Then in 1937, former Dominican dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered the massacre of 20,000 Haitian migrants in a quest to "cleanse" his country.

Over the years, relations between the two countries slowly improved, with the Dominican Republic becoming a staging ground for aid efforts following the devastating January 2010 earthquake that killed more than 300,000 people in Haiti.

Roughly 100,000 Haitians fled to the Dominican Republic after the earthquake, and the Dominican government temporarily suspended immigration enforcement. But early this year, authorities began arresting and then deporting thousands of Haitians. Dominican officials said they feared the spread of a cholera outbreak in Haiti, but civil right advocates said hundreds of legal migrants were also detained.

An estimated 500,000 to 1 million ethnic Haitians live in the Dominican Republic.

Last month, the Dominican Supreme Court upheld a 2007 law aimed at reducing the use of fake documents, which has led the government to confiscate or annul birth certificates of those born to Haitian immigrants. Many of those immigrants were given work visas in previous decades that the Dominican government now refuses to recognize.

Nonprofit groups estimate that at least 1,600 people have been denied their documents as a result of the law, and activists worry others will follow now that Pierre is gone.

Pierre experienced the marginalization firsthand as one of 12 children raised in a Dominican migrant worker camp.

At just 13, she rallied her Dominican-Haitian neighbors and organized a march to demand rights for sugar cane workers, spending a day in jail while police threatened to deport her to Haiti, where her mother was born.

Pierre later founded the Dominican-Haitian Women's Movement, a nonprofit group that builds homes in poor communities, helps secure basic services such as potable water, organizes workshops for women, and fights for the rights of Dominican-Haitians.

Altagracia Jean Joseph is a 25-year-old law school student who credits Pierre with helping her obtain a copy of her birth certificate so she could enroll in college.

"I consider myself one of Sonia's daughters," she said. "I am sure there are many of us."

But thousands of others are still awaiting birth certificates needed to obtain a job or go to school.

Mireina Fortine, a 45-year-old woman who sells bread for a living, said she has fought to obtain those documents for her nephews without success.

"They tell us that since our last name is foreign, and we're children of Haitians, they cannot give us a birth certificate," she said.

Ninaj Raoul, director of the New York-based Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees, said she believes there is enough frustration boiling among Dominican-Haitians to carry on Pierre's work.

Raoul attended a Dec. 8 protest in which hundreds of Dominican-Haitians and their supporters demanded protection of their rights. The protest took place four days after Pierre died of a heart attack.

"It was pretty clear at that point that the legacy of Sonia Pierre is continuing and that the fight is still on," Raoul said. "I don't think there is any one person who can replace Sonia Pierre. But many people can replace her, and I saw that happening."

AL woman to discontinue tornado Facebook site

By JEFF MARTIN
Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) - In the weeks and months after tornadoes tore through homes across the South, pictures and documents rained on yards hundreds of miles away.

An Alabama woman began collecting them in an online database, posting the cherished scraps of people's lives on Facebook so they could be identified and claimed by grateful families.

Now, eight months after the April tornadoes struck in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, Patty Bullion says she plans to discontinue the online database of pictures and documents.

She says she will leave Facebook page up for a couple more weeks, then take it down and focus on other things in her life. She said the items pictured are highly personal, and she doesn't think they should be online indefinitely.

Tebow throws 2 pick-6s

QB intercepted 4 times as Denver falls into tie with Oakland top AFC West

Image: Spencer JohnsonAP

The Bills' Spencer Johnson (91) celebrates his touchdown after intercepting a pass from Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

By JOHN WAWROW

updated 6:52 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Tim Tebow picked a terrible time to run out of fourth-quarter comebacks.

Rather than inspiring the Denver Broncos to another dramatic rally, the quarterback sealed the most dreadful performance of his two-year career by throwing four interceptions - all in the second half and two returned for touchdowns 18 seconds apart - in a 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

It happened as the Broncos (8-7) had a chance to inch closer to clinching their first playoff berth in six years, and against a Bills team that was coming off seven straight losses and had little to play for.

"My confidence is just fine," Tebow said. "I have to do a better job of not giving them opportunities. I tried to make something happen, and I tried to force it."

Denver coach John Fox hasn't lost faith in Tebow.

"I just think a couple of misreads," Fox said.

And no, he gave no thought of pulling Tebow at any point during a second half in which four of the Broncos' final six possessions ended with interceptions.

On the bright side, Denver's not done yet, despite falling into a tie with Oakland atop the AFC West. Denver closes its season by hosting the Kansas City Chiefs next week, and still holds the tiebreaker edge over the Raiders.

"Everything is still on the table," Tebow said. "We have to go and execute and play a little better. Hopefully, we can get in the tournament."

Tebow finished 13 of 30 for 185 yards with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Fells. He added 34 yards rushing, and scored on a 1-yard plunge.

That wasn't nearly good enough for a player who entered the game best known for engineering five fourth-quarter comebacks this season.

The Bills (6-9) made sure he never got in position for a sixth in coming away with a win in their home finale.

Safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Spencer Johnson scored on interception returns 18 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter. C.J. Spiller rushed for a career-best 111 yards and a touchdown, and Leodis McKelvin scored on an 80-yard punt return.

"It's special," Johnson said. "We had a monkey on our back for a long time."

Added safety George Wilson: "It's a great reward for the resilience, commitment and dedication."

The Bills' four interceptions were two more than they managed in their previous seven games. They have returned five interceptions for touchdowns to set a single-season franchise record.

If the game wasn't over with 8:03 left when Byrd jumped in front of Tebow's pass intended for Eric Decker up the left hash mark and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown, then it certainly was decided on the Broncos' next play from scrimmage.

Tebow was flushed from the pocket and was scrambling to his left when linebacker Chris Kelsay dived from behind and batted the ball out of the quarterback's hand. The ball flew into the air and landed in the hands of Johnson, who ran it in from 17 yards.

Kelsay, the longest-serving member of the defense, had two sacks and led the team with nine tackles.

"We've lost seven games in a row. It wears on you," Kelsay said. "We got rewarded. We came together and we executed."

After weeks of assertive defense, the Broncos gave up 40 points for a second straight game - though Tebow's giveaways certainly didn't help. And yet Denver allowed 160 yards rushing and 351 yards in all to a banged-up Bills offense that was averaging 14.2 points and 314.7 yards during its seven-game skid.

While Tebow was struggling, Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick enjoyed his most efficient game in two months by going 15 of 27 for 196 yards with no interceptions. Fitzpatrick entered the game taking plenty of heat during the seven-game skid, in which he threw eight touchdowns versus 12 interceptions.

Dave Rayner shook off two missed field-goal attempts - and a booing crowd - to hit his final four, all from within 29 yards.

"I'm glad that Coach stuck with me," Rayner said. "I'm glad that we got opportunities, because I never want to leave a game going oh-fer."

Except for scoring touchdowns on their first possession of each half, nothing went right for the Broncos.

They went nowhere in the first half after Tebow capped a 73-yard opening drive with a 1-yard run. Denver managed just 21 yards and no first downs on its final six possessions, including a kneeldown in the final seconds.

They finished converting just two of 13 third-down chances and Tebow had four of his final six drives end with interceptions.

NOTES: After McKelvin scored, Denver's Eddie Royal returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by a block in the back penalty against Dante Rosario. ... Broncos RB Willis McGahee had 64 yards rushing to give him 1,054 this season. He became the second NFL player to reach 1,000 yards rushing with three teams. He previously did it with Buffalo and Baltimore. Ricky Watters rushed for 1,000 yards with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Seattle. ... The Bills finished 5-3 at home (including a win over Washington at Toronto), matching their best record since going 5-3 in 2004.

Why India pulled the welcome mat for Wal-Mart

Intense protest prompted India to shelve plans this month to allow box stores like Wal-Mart. But many say the retail sector is backward and needs the jobs and investment such stores would bring.

The Indian government's recent plans to open the retail sector to foreign big-box stores like Wal-Mart was met with such vehement pushback from people across India that the plans had to be shelved earlier this month.

Unlike in the United States, where more than 80 percent of Americans shop at supermarkets and chain stores, most Indians still shop in kirana, or tiny mom and pop stores. The 15 million small retail outlets here employ tens of millions of people.

While India has welcomed many Western companies under two decades of economic liberalization, the move to megastores has proved to be a tough sell.

The idea of driving long distances on bad roads, battling for a parking spot, and choosing between hundreds of brands perplexes many consumers who say they are happy with the current small-and-local model. But the domestic resistance frustrates Indian technocrats and business elites who are focused on keeping India's growth rates high.

While Wal-Mart worries many shopkeepers, some are banking on customer loyalty and shopping habits to save them.

Rajiv Malik owns a kirana in the alleyway of a middle-class neighborhood in Delhi. His shop, a mini-version of Wal-Mart, offers everything from shampoo and vegetables to underwear and plastic beach balls.

"Over half of my customers buy on credit, and I will deliver anything from a loaf of bread to a few eggs," says Mr. Malik, who keeps track of purchases in a big, yellow notebook. "I don't think that Wal-Mart will be able to provide this kind of service."

Ilyas, who goes by one name, plays dual roles as a middleman buying fruits and vegetables from whole-salers and running a roadside stand. Like Malik, he thinks he can compete. "Even though big stores may be able to sell for less, they can't keep their fruits and vegetables as fresh as mine," he says. "My customers are willing to pay more for quality."

Job jitters

While Malik and Ilyas may not seem concerned about the coming of the big shops, millions of others worry that they could lose their jobs. Responding to that anxiety, opposition parties blocked the government's decision to allow foreign, multibrand retailers, such as Wal-Mart and Tesco.

"The economy as a whole can only gain if the presence of foreign retailers creates more opportunities for the manufacturing sector, as opposed to being threatened by it," says Rajeev Chandrasekhar, one of the members of Parliament who blocked the measure.

The failed resolution left economist Rajiv Kumar, the secretary-general of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, fuming.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? For all those super expectations, all the preseason hype, all the big-name additions, the Philadelphia Eagles are left to ponder all that went wrong.

Despite their late-season surge ? a three-game winning streak ? the Eagles (7-8) aren't going to the playoffs. That's the reality for this Dream Team.

So before they begin looking ahead to next season, they're thinking about the 'what ifs?' One play could be the difference in several of the losses, especially because the Eagles blew five fourth-quarter leads.

"If we would have gotten into the playoffs, I feel we would have definitely done some damage," quarterback Michael Vick said after Saturday's 20-7 win at Dallas. "It's unfortunate that we didn't and that's the game of football. If you make some mistakes early and you get behind in the count in the win/loss column, you sell yourself short in the end and you're in the position that we are in. We're just happy that we are finishing strong. We have one more game to play and we're going to give it everything we've got."

Vick and his teammates wasted an opportunity to repeat as division champions in a mediocre NFC East that will crown a champion ? either the Cowboys or New York Giants ? with no more than nine wins.

The Eagles entered Saturday at 6-8 and still had a chance to win the division, but were eliminated when the Giants beat the New York Jets, rendering their game at Dallas meaningless.

"I've watched this team grow as the weeks have went on," Vick said. "The last three or four weeks, we've come together as a team. It's a family environment, a family atmosphere and that translates to winning. That's why you see a different team. I think we are well put together and well fit. We're playing together and that's what it's all about. But it takes time to build that chemistry, build that unity, that togetherness. Doing it now, it's exciting for me and there's not a place that I'd rather be each and every day."

When the Eagles went on a spending spree and brought in Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Cullen Jenkins, Steve Smith, Ronnie Brown and Vince Young to join a roster that already had a talented core of star players, expectations were elevated to perhaps unrealistic levels.

Even management declared this an all-or-nothing season in which nothing less than a Super Bowl victory would be considered a success. Now the Eagles are looking back and wondering how much they really needed those offseason minicamps and a full training camp.

"We are finishing strong, and are showing the fans and everybody else what the true Eagles could have been, what we could have been doing at the beginning of the season," Rodgers-Cromartie said. "It just took a while to get there. We take that into the offseason and don't look back."

It seemed the Eagles could be headed for major changes when they were 4-8. Fans wanted coach Andy Reid fired and it appeared offensive-line-coach-turned-defensive-coordinator Juan Castillo would lose his job.

But a strong finish could keep this coaching staff together for at least another season. Reid is missing the playoffs for just the fourth time in 13 years, so this is new territory for many of his players.

"This is an unfamiliar feeling, an unfamiliar sight," wide receiver DeSean Jackson said. "I've never really witnessed this. It's a reality check. Look in the mirror. Everybody has to check themselves. Hopefully, we can finish strong and come back in the offseason or next year, whenever we are all together, and really eliminate all the mistakes we had early on."

(AP) ? Mel Gibson's three-decade marriage is officially over.

A judge finalized the actor-director's divorce on Friday from his wife Robyn, who was married to Gibson during his acting heyday and his more recent public downfall.

The judgment entered by Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas keeps virtually all details of the pair's split confidential. Neither Gibson nor his ex-wife, whose name is being restored to Robyn Moore, attended Friday's proceedings.

It does not indicate an official date for the former couple's separation. Robyn Moore did not list a date in her April 2009 divorce filing, although Gibson indicated they had been living apart since 2006.

The former couple have seven children together, but only their 12-year-old son is a minor and subject to a custody agreement.

The Gibsons' divorce has been more dramatically more low-key than Gibson's custody battle with Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva, who the "Braveheart" star agreed in August to pay $750,000 to settle a bitter dispute and split custody of their young daughter.

Recordings that sounded distinctly like the Oscar winning director engaged in a racist and sexist tirade were leaked during the couple's dispute. Grigorieva accused Gibson of domestic violence and he pleaded no contest, although admitted no fault, to a misdemeanor battery count earlier in March.

Robyn Moore came to her estranged husband's defense, filing a brief declaration in the Grigorieva case stating that Gibson had never physically abused her or their children.

Attorneys handling the divorce have worked for months to reach a settlement in the case and records show Robyn Moore signed the final judgment last week. Gibson signed it Wednesday, records show.

Stephen Colbert will sponsor South Carolina's GOP primary (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? "The Colbert Nation Super PAC Presidential Primary" -- can you picture it in big, bold neon letters?

The Comedy Central funnyman is continuing his fight to sponsor the South Carolina GOP presidential primary, offering half a million dollars to cover the counties' "shortfall" in a guest editorial in The State.

State officials have been fighting over who should fund the primary, which is the first of the season in the South. Colbert, a Charleston native, has offered to help out through his Colbert Super PAC.

He formed the PAC earlier this year to satirize the country's campaign finance system, which became even more divisive after the Supreme Court's ruling in the Citizens United case.

Colbert -- who, in 2007, attempted to run for president, but only in South Carolina -- previously offered the South Carolina GOP the money it needed if it would name the contest after him. The GOP denied Colbert's olive branch but assented to putting the naming rights on the ballot as a referendum if Colbert promised to contribute.

The South Carolina Supreme Court rained on that parade by eliminating all referendum questions from the ballot.

Now Colbert is asking for one more chance.

"As a proud son of South Carolina I must address recent unsubstantiated rumors published in The State that I, Stephen Colbert, tried to buy the naming rights to the 2012 Republican primary," he wrote. "First, never trust anything in a newspaper -- except this column, and possibly 'Mallard Filmore.' And second, these outrageous and scurrilous rumors border on libel, even if they are, technically, true. I don't want to talk about it."

He demands just two things: "that you support the Democrats' petition to get my referendum back on the ballot, and that you grant me the pre-negotiated naming rights, which, I think we can all agree, you now own. To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, 'You paid for that microphone!'"

FBI: Geezer Bandit Doesn't Run Like A Geezer

LOS ANGELES ? The FBI says an elderly-looking bank robber dubbed the "Geezer Bandit" may not be as old as he appears.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller says the robber believed to be responsible for 16 holdups in California may be wearing an elaborate costume. Witnesses have repeatedly told investigators that the robber appears to be wearing a mask and gloves.

Investigators also point to a surveillance video of a robbery earlier this month at a Bank of America in San Luis Obispo, where a security dye-pack exploded as the robber was making his getaway.

Eimiller says the speed with which the so-called "Geezer" was able to run away does not match his appearance of 60 to 70 years old.

Authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Deutsche Boerse, NYSE deal wins U.S. approval (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Deutsche Boerse (DB1Gn.DE) won U.S. antitrust approval to buy NYSE Euronext (NYX.N) in a $9 billion deal to create the world's No. 1 exchange operator, but the transaction still faces serious regulatory headwinds in Europe.

The Justice Department said on Thursday that the deal, which was announced in February, won U.S. approval on condition that a Deutsche Boerse subsidiary, the International Securities Exchange, divest its 31.5 percent interest in Direct Edge.

There have been few critics of the deal in the United States, despite the NYSE's symbolism as a bastion of American capitalism. The exchange was founded in 1792 when share trading began on a block now designated as Wall Street.

Deutsche Boerse and NYSE must also continue to provide some services, under the Justice Department approval, to Direct Edge, the fourth-largest U.S. stock exchange operator, behind NYSE Euronext, Nasdaq OMX (NDAQ.O) and BATS Exchange.

Direct Edge is run by a consortium that includes hedge fund Citadel and investment bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N).

"We are very pleased to have received the approval of the DOJ, an important milestone on our path to completing our compelling Trans-Atlantic combination," Duncan Niederauer, chief executive of NYSE Euronext, said in an emailed statement.

NYSE Euronext shareholders have already approved the deal.

Richard Repetto, an analyst at Sandler O'Neil, called the U.S. approval "irrelevant."

"The big issue is over in Europe, and whether the European competition commission is going to approve the deal. They expected this. They knew they would likely have to divest the ownership in Direct Edge," he said.

Potential buyers of the stake include BATS, he said. " I don't know whether they'd allow Nasdaq to own it because there'd be a lot of concentration again," he added.

ALL EYES ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

In Europe, there have been weeks of negotiations with antitrust regulators, in which staff made clear their reservations about approving a combination of Deutsche Boerse's Eurex and NYSE Euronext's Liffe on concerns that the merged entity would have a monopoly over European listed derivatives trading.

Both Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext have said they would not pursue the merger if they were asked to divest either Eurex or Liffe. A formal decision by the European Commission is not expected until January or early February.

In a bid to soothe regulatory concerns, Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext have offered to cap fees on trading in their European derivatives contracts for three years, and to sell the entire single-stock equity derivatives business of NYSE Euronext's Liffe unit.

The EU Commission has said it would make a decision on the deal by February 9.

In Germany, Deutsche Boerse's home regulator is insisting on concessions to win European approval, potentially further complicating the path to completing the deal.

Celebrate the holidays with huge App Store games sales (Appolicious)

Every year, as the Christmas holiday approaches, the iTunes App Store sees a whole lot of games sales. After a fast one pulled by Electronic Arts last year, just about every developer on the iOS platform has slashed the prices of their games ahead of Christmas.

The reason for the sales (other than holiday cheer) is that at a certain point approaching Christmas and New Year?s in the U.S., Apple freezes the App Store. That means that for several days, the prices on the App Store are locked, as are its Top Charts. It?s those charts that are a really big deal to developers ? when an app appears on the Top Paid charts, for example, they tend to do a whole lot of business. So dropping the price on an app to get it on the chart can earn developers a coveted spot for days once Apple freezes iTunes.

EA pulled this trick last year, dropping just about its entire game catalogue to free or $0.99. That allowed EA games to flood the top charts on iTunes with a bunch of its titles all through the holiday freeze. This caused lots of games to miss out on holiday sales while EA cleaned up.

The good news is that EA has dropped just about its entire app catalogue down to the buck range again this year. You can find tons of games, including EA?s much-lauded Dead Space, just by searching ?Electronic Arts? in the App Store. But rather than let EA game the App Store again this year, lots of other developers are dropping the prices on their games, too.

Gameloft, for one, has sliced the prices of tons of games, including N.O.V.A. 2 and UNO. Not all of its newest games are seeing discounts, but there are still some quality titles that can be found by searching ?Gameloft.? Another big iOS game maker, Telltale Games, has cut prices for many of its point-and-click adventure titles including its Hector: Badge of Carnage titles and the five episodes of Back to the Future: The Game.

Even smaller studios are reducing the prices of their games. Jelly Defense maker iDreams has cut its catalogue, bringing 10 iPhone and iPad games down to just a buck. Crescent Moon Games, the studio behind role-playing title Aralon: Sword and Shadow and Gears, has also gotten in on the dollar bandwagon.

Over the next few days, it?s worth it to kick around the App Store or check our Price Cuts and look for more games on sale, because there are likely to be sales from publishers such as Capcom, Ubisoft, Disney Interactive and others in the works. Now is the perfect time to grab great games apps (or give them as gifts). You?ll see the best prices of the year over the last week, so make sure you?re paying attention.
